After the initial approval of the Ministry of Health for the construction of this specialized cancer unit, a letter was sent to the administration of Chamek Hospital from the Public Works Department to identify the place for the construction of this infrastructure. The letter was signed on September 22, 2019 by the then Executive Engineer of Chittagong Public Works Division-1 Mohammad Shahjahan. Following a letter from the Public Works Department, the hospital administration determined the vacant space next to the existing cancer ward (adjacent to the canteen) for the construction of a new building for the cancer unit. Talking to the concerned people, it has been learned that this specialized cancer unit is being set up with the funding of the government. Earlier, the Ministry of Health sent a letter to Chamek Hospital in 2016 seeking detailed information for the construction of the specialized unit. The hospital authorities prepared and sent a detailed proposal in the light of the ministry’s letter.
As per the proposal sent to the ministry, this specialized cancer unit will have one stop service, operation theater and ICU (Intensive Care Unit) facility. In addition to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy machines, which are essential for the treatment of cancer, there will also be state-of-the-art linear finger machines. Apart from this, there will be palliative care for patients who are unable to take therapy.
The proposal calls for at least five beds for pediatric cancer patients in this specialized cancer unit. It has also been mentioned that at least 70-80 posts of doctors will be created in the unit. In addition to cancer doctors, the unit also proposes to have at least three anesthesiologists, cancer surgeons and medical doctors to provide one-stop service. In the initial stage, a patient will actually have the necessary therapy and treatment at the One Stop Service Center to diagnose his disease. In addition to the cancer doctors, there will be medicine, cancer surgeons and anesthetists, said the head professor of the cancer department. Sajjad Md. Yusuf and the department’s assistant professor. Ali Asgar Chowdhury.
They said the unit will also have state-of-the-art machine linear indicators for cancer treatment. It has been proposed to have at least three linear anglers worth Rs 15 to 20 crore each. They think that once the work of setting up the specialized cancer unit is completed, there will be tremendous progress in the treatment of cancer in Chittagong. Through which a large number of cancer patients in Chittagong will get the benefit of specialized cancer treatment at low cost, they said.
