The National Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) kicked off the deliberation field on the 12th in protest against public interest members who suggested the minimum wage for next year to be determined at 9030 to 9,300 won per hour (an increase of 3.6 to 6.7%).

Four members of the Minimum Wage Committee of the Confederation of Trade Unions, including Vice Chairman Park Hee-eun of the Confederation of Trade Unions, left the 9th plenary meeting held at the government complex in Sejong on the same day at around 11 pm.

The KCTU members left about two and a half hours after the public interest committee presented the deliberation promotion section.

Previously, when labor and management continued the revolution in the ‘freeze vs. 10,000 won’ structure, the public interest committee suggested an amount that increased by 310 to 580 won from this year’s minimum wage of 8,720 won as the deliberation promotion section. The committee members set a certain range and request the submission of the labor-management amendment bill again. It is evaluated as an important criterion to determine the intentions of the public interest members who have the initiative in the deliberation of the minimum wage. After the deliberation promotion section was presented, the labor and management stopped the meeting and continued internal discussions with the steering committee.

At the meeting that continued after that, Vice-Chairman Park left the meeting room with Goseong after expressing a protest against the deliberation promotion section.

He met with reporters right after leaving the office and criticized, “The Moon Jae-in administration’s pledge of 10,000 won for a minimum wage was a social agreement to secure a safety net for low-wage workers, but even in the last deliberation of the Moon administration this year, there was no proposal approaching 10,000 won.

Vice-Chairman Park pointed out that “they have been tortured with hope for low-wage workers,” and “the voices of low-wage workers are still being ignored.”

According to the Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), Park Jun-sik, chairman of the minimum wage, left a remark to the effect that the facilitation section of this deliberation was ‘the last’. It is interpreted as implying that they will not revise the section presentation despite strong protests from the labor community.

Five members of the workers’ committee from the Korea Federation of Trade Unions (FKTU) remained in the meeting room and continued the deliberation.

Next year’s minimum wage decision is expected to be finalized either tonight or early the next morning. If the discussion on that day is past midnight, the committee will continue with the 10th plenary session with a change of order.
