COMMENT: Zeman was inaccurate and state-cold in his Christmas message. He forgot about the holiday empathy and those affected by the tornado

But his Christmas message had little to do with Christmas, holiday empathy and any encouragement was completely absent. To state that the past year has not been good, there is nothing new, revealing for the nation. People wanted to hear some hope and maybe a certain soothing that was to come at this time, just at Christmas is the perfect time for him. The head of state was to suppress a certain fright, which was evident in her rhetoric. On the other hand, it is nice that President Miloš Zeman did not protest anyone and in the end he was given the quotes of the first Czechoslovak Minister of Finance Alois Rašín and former US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

The president, with Babiš’s praise, committed a misstep

In his penultimate speech, he outlined burning, current topics such as the departure of the allies from Afghanistan, the green fate and the covid, which he renamed covid-21. Quite in context, he failed to mention that all the destruction of the infection came from communist and totalitarian China, where he liked to fly so that he could learn from the dictators to stabilize society. With regard to green fate, it seemed as if everything was already clearly dictated and internal combustion engines were already banned, as well as that heating with natural gas is a thing of the past. Many citizens who do not have sufficient access to information, frightened and could thus spread the panic. Even Prime Minister Petr Fiala has never completely lost the so-called Green Deal, on the contrary, he sees other new economic opportunities for the Czech Republic in it. He made a number of inaccuracies and misinformation regarding the green agreement, such as the end of natural gas heating in 2030. Zeman also simplified the abolition of tax exemptions, which would bring 380 billion crowns to the insufficient budget, as he described it. Here he thought as a cold economist who, for example, completely ignores families with children. The state should save first and foremost on itself, not on its citizens.

After all, one extremely false tone was heard from Lány during the Christmas message. President Miloš Zeman praised the previous government of Andrej Babiš. There is nothing to pick up from his office. With his populist policies, Babiš almost brought the country to bankruptcy and he can’t just make excuses for the coronavirus pandemic, he only takes it as a certain lawyer for justification. We would be heading for an economic bottom without it. Babiš’s incompetence only doubled in her. Through his chaotic actions, the former prime minister bears the share of more than thirty thousand victims, the collapse of many self-employed people who did not receive timely help due to the closures. Praising Babiš is a huge overstep, even a flight. The whole of Europe is horrified by who could have been prime minister in our country for four years and how the president downplayed him and defended him aggressively. Babiš could thus help his Agrofert as much as possible, but definitely not the Czech Republic. Zeman simply won’t go against the prime minister, as if he’s already helping him start his pre-election castle campaign.

A slight flash of the old, evil Zeman appeared when he unobtrusively dug into the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský, against whom he had long been opposed. Again, he did not forgive the remark that a politician must also be an expert, which, according to him, is not the new head of diplomacy. Sometimes his stubborn belief in his own truth is reminiscent of a small child who has nothing to explain. Zeman simply did not deal with the fact that in the end he did not veto Lipavsky. And so, where it goes, she leans on it. Proof of this was the appointment of the government, when Mynář Castle probably intentionally stated to Jan Lipavský that he was a master, so that he would immediately correct himself and title him as a bachelor.

The head of state made it clear that he disagreed with the Purple Cabinet in many ways. His ideas also diverge from the new government regarding compulsory vaccination against covid-19, although both camps agree with the vaccination. Zeman would be obliged to order it, as in Austria, while the newly formed team from Straka’s Academy may introduce vaccination after consultations only in the professional sectors. Yes, Zeman is right that only vaccinations can get us out of a pandemic, on the other hand, Fiala does not want to act as a dictator when he emphasized in the election campaign that people in particular decide on their own destinies. It’s hard to say who’s right. Only time will tell whether Zeman’s opinion should have been respected or whether Fial’s tolerance has paid off. However, the President is aware that he will no longer have such an influence on the new government of Petr Fiala as on Babiš’s cabinet, so he limited himself to his position without cupping the elected executive significantly.

The year was not so bad when people could stick together

Where Zeman actually worked as a statesman was the passage about the Allies leaving Afghanistan. Indeed, the Exodus is most likely to trigger further terrorist attacks, especially when the country is ruled again by fanatical Taliban radicals who stop at nothing. Zeman rightly warned that the world could experience a new 9/11. Leaving Afghanistan is a defeat for the democratic forces, which is an unbelievable gamble. Nothing can be criticized here for the rhetoric of the highest constitutional official. Afghanistan is indeed a bigger threat than the aforementioned green agreement, which really cannot be compared to the withdrawal of a democratic coalition.

In his speech, he also placed great emphasis on the energy crisis, which is caused by high prices, which can plunge many into absolute poverty. It is nice that Zeman thinks of the economically weak, but certainly in connection with the energy crisis they did not find themselves in such despair as the people of South Moravia, which was hit by a tornado six months ago. The inhabitants of Stebno near Kryr in North Bohemia, who also suffered a devastating storm at a similar time, also fall into oblivion. They certainly don’t need to hear that the past year was not good when the element killed their loved ones, thanks to which some still do not live in their own. Material damage is not the worst for them, most of them have a hard time at Christmas, the fact that the natural phenomenon took away all the photos of their deceased parents, so they have no memory of them.

Sometimes it’s just not enough to avoid insulting others, not harassing journalists and trying to be cold statesman. Who but the president should show a great deal of empathy, especially during the holidays? The head of state in particular had to appreciate the bravery of these people, applaud their unwavering will and pick up mutual heroism and a wave of solidarity. It was the tornado in the Czech nation that woke up the good, we are not such selfish. Dozens of volunteers set out to help, many sent money to charities, and seniors were among them, who so voluntarily became modest. Single mothers, who otherwise live, did not let themselves be ashamed.

On this side, the past year has not been so bad, Mr. President. People have shown that they can stick together when an accident occurs, and that is a wonderful finding. The world is not just about the state budget, energy, ecology, but it is also about good people who have wonderful hearts. Unfortunately, you forgot about them in the Christmas message. You said we should be brave, but you probably missed the fact that you were the president of a brave and courageous nation. It’s a shame you didn’t remember. When but at Christmas is the best time to appreciate miracles?
