As the great Russian poet and philosopher said, “Every unhappy company is unhappy in its own way, and all happy companies are deluded.” There will be no return to the “old normality”, and the key question is how we will create a “new normality” or at least adapt to it if we are not able to participate in its creation.
The situation we are in is neither an old nor a new normality. The ICT world is no exception, so everyone manages as they know how. Hardware manufacturers have raised prices, and the excuses are very reasonable – chronic lack of chips and drastically increased transport and logistics costs. Current mobile operators offer 5G phone models on the hit pages, but they skillfully avoid any participation in public debates on the introduction of 5G technology or any kind of education of citizens and the economy about the benefits of its introduction. And where will we go to 5G – I guess only they know that.
Not to be outdone, I would highlight the efforts of companies that build data centers, develop new services, reduce energy consumption and increase the security and safety of their services. In some “next normality” you will realize that much more useful are average devices associated with useful, functional and safe services than high-end devices that have no connection to the outside world. Don’t let me tell you later.
Imposition on the vilayet
When we take the opportunity to turn the general turmoil to our own advantage, we cannot bypass the biggest turnaround in 2021, which was largely initiated by Microsoft. Many new services and innovations over the past year may seem unnecessary to some, but they will certainly have a profound effect on future “ICT normality”.
Uninterrupted performance of usual, routine tasks is a very important prerequisite to free up additional time and space for creativity.
Let’s start with the Microsoft 365 package (aka Office 365), which is obviously the focus of the company’s development. For years, I have been a user of the Family package, which I initially paid 6,500, then 8,500, and this year more than 10,000 dinars. The price is not progressing as well as with cryptocurrencies, but it seems that the effort is still worth something and that Microsoft is fully aware of the value of the investment. Admittedly, there are some alternatives to these services and application packages, but… When I get Google Docs text or a Google Sheet as an editor, I get “butterflies in my stomach” – and they are unpleasant.
The Windows desktop cloud machine is also a novelty from last year. As stupid as the idea may seem to us, there is potential for development. Like other users, I spend most of my time in a browser, with text or a spreadsheet, which requires a relatively normal “machine”. I seldom touch video production or 3D rendering, which requires disproportionately large capacities for which you have no excuse, unless it is a regular job since you have a regular (and very decent) income. Temporarily hiring large resources for such unusual opportunities would be a much more rational solution. The alternative is to buy a skirt worth a few thousand dinars in which I would dance a TikTok video and collect probably hundreds of thousands of views – incomparably more than by sharing “useful ICT tips”.
Two aces up his sleeve
The final “hit” of Microsoft in the past year is certainly Windows 11, which sends unequivocal messages to users. The first and most important is – we all have to move on. Don’t like the new look or layout of the icons? Sorry, but from now on you will have to do so because research and user surveys have shown that this is new – better. Of course, there are ways to customize Windows 11 so that it doesn’t look like Windows 11 at all, but for that you need knowledge that you may not have. All you have are habits you are not in the mood to change…
The second and more comprehensive message is that you are free to dispose of hardware that is older than two or three years, which is certainly a much bigger problem for more experienced users. We are not used to buying a new computer every year. Although the hardware is getting better and better adapted to modern requirements and the use of services and the cloud. It’s no secret that Microsoft occasionally “flatters” hardware manufacturers, excluding outdated hardware concepts. Without it, hardware development would be meaningless, as would the introduction of new uses, which include services and the cloud.
So for next year, be sure to plan on buying a new computer that has at least 8 GB of RAM, an SSD of at least 512 GB with the obligatory modern (Windows 11) operating system and the use of Microsoft 365 services. Don’t pay much attention to domestic (uninformed and lazy) traders who have brought a lot of 4 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD computers to the warehouses that no one “outside” wants to buy anymore. I am absolutely sure that you will not be happy with them either, and all the questions I receive by e-mail, such as: “Win13 has come out, can I install Win11 now?”, Will go directly to spam. Goodbye and thank you for all the fish…
Home, we have a problem…
We organized ourselves nicely and realized what we need for a modern business. As usual, we need people who do some, seemingly routine, but very important jobs for the survival (and even prosperity) of your (or our?) Company. Uninterrupted performance of usual, routine tasks is a very important precondition to free up additional time and space for creativity.
Modern hardware and intensive use of services would be a minimum precondition for solving things positively. But who will provide those preconditions? The company has already invested a lot in space, offices, server, link (s) for optical Internet, respectable NAS storage space and expensive computers for employees. At the same time, she saved on fees for a hot meal or public transport – but in valuable and prosperous companies, no one even looks at such trifles.
Isolation made us isolate ourselves. For transgressors, working from home has become desirable. Hand on heart, most of the work of all of us consists of waiting for someone else to do their part so we can continue. During that time, we can use our bathroom (which is not just a toilet bowl and sink with a diameter of about 30 cm), and when we get hungry, we can prepare a decent meal, without going out to buy it ourselves or waiting to deliver it to us. Not to be overlooked is the fact that sometimes, in the meantime, we can take a little nap or watch a series or a movie. Not to mention the problems with getting dressed, parking, looking for a parking space “at the company” (which is paid), and the uncertain return home that again accompanies all these activities and problems.
Then why don’t we all work from home? That would save the company, and us. Well, it can’t – simply because now you have to personally invest in a good computer, internet connection and a decent workplace inside a once cramped home, where children (or puppies and kittens) will behave politely while you work or meet. Although it seems simple, in practice these are sometimes unsolvable problems.
The final question is, will you be ready to step into the next year, 2022? Are you ready for all the challenges that await you? In my humble experience, there are two types of workers. Some adapt and perform their (sometimes completely new, and sometimes meaningless) tasks on time, in accordance with personal and company interests. They usually assess how they will perform these tasks as efficiently as possible and do not hesitate to invest something in new technologies, computers, services and everything that is needed to do the job in accordance with the highest standards that they have prescribed for themselves. And they do it regardless of whether they work in the office or at home.
In the next normality, you will realize that much more useful are average devices associated with useful, functional and safe services than high-end devices that have no connection to the outside world.
Members of the “other kind” have been constantly grumbling about how much better it used to be, how they need to return to something old or to concepts that time has passed or has long since overtaken. One should not stubbornly insist on old or new concepts. For example – I don’t need a smart watch of 300-400 euros to know what time it is, or a helmet to “move” to a new metaworld, but I will consider both carefully. Adaptation is the key to survival, even evolution. What does 2022 bring us? Choose carefully…
