Combicon is the world’s largest program of printed circuit board connection technology – celebrating its 50th anniversary

With the slogan “The Spirit of Connection”, Combicon celebrates the program Phoenix Contact its 50th anniversary this year.

Since 1972, Combicon PCB terminals and PCB connectors have provided connection technology for the transmission of signals, data or power in a wide range of applications.

“Back in 1972, it became increasingly clear that developments in control panels, machine building and electricity were increasingly shifting to industrial electronics. With the KDS clamp for printed circuit boards, we developed the original clamp, which marked our entry into the world of electronics,” recalls Klaus Eisert, Phoenix Contact shareholder and the creative brain behind the first printed circuit clamp. “And thus began an era in industrial PCB terminals for Phoenix Contact. From the state, the green clamps signaled quality, and they still do to this day.”

In the following decades, the product range has developed from humble beginnings to a constantly growing and varied range, which now includes around 100 different product ranges. Users from all over the world use these products in, for example, inverters, complex controllers or modern smart home applications. Phoenix Contact has produced several billion Combicon PCB terminals and PCB connectors since 1972.

“We have always been passionate about making the best technology even better. In our constant development, Combicon has succeeded time and again over decades in setting new standards in printed circuit board connection technology on a global scale. The innovations, which started in Blomberg and have become internationally recognized, include, for example, the first PCB terminal with Push-in connection, the invention of single-row connectors with different numbers of poles and with spectacle connection for individual field wiring, as well as the first terminal with rocker arm and with additional Push-in function.”

So what characterizes this remarkable success? It is the ability to continue to challenge the technology used and to constantly strive for solutions that can keep up with developments. The program is constantly adapted to customer requirements. The company always reacts to trends such as miniaturization and increased performance and efficiency in printed circuit board assembly by offering the appropriate connection technology for the task.

This is also demonstrated with the modular, configurable PCB terminals from the SPT modular series, launched in 2021. They enable the combination of different, individual elements to create a tailored connection block. In order to offer an almost unlimited variety of PCB terminals that are easy to handle and quickly available, Phoenix Contact has implemented its first end-to-end digital process from configuration to production.

“We are of course very proud of the 50-year success story of our Combicon product range,” states Torsten Janwlecke, COO at Phoenix Contact and President of the Business Area Device Connectors. As our anniversary slogan “The Spirit of Connecting” says, we have always looked to the future. Newly emerging application areas related to the increasing electrification of mobility infrastructure, the increasing degree of automation of buildings and industrial systems or the smartification of our supply network are all growth areas that are sources of new applications for our Combicon program and thus breathe new life into the program. Combicon is thus also the heart of Phoenix Contact’s vision of an All Electric Society. And with countless product variants and solutions, we enable our customers to handle the tasks they will be given in connection with the extensive electrification, networking and automation of all relevant areas of life and work – and of course Combicon plays an important role as ” stick” in this context.”
