Cockroaches in the house: causes and remedies

Cockroaches in the house: causes and remedies

The Beatles at home they certainly represent a very unwelcome human-animal coexistence. In addition to the more than understandable fear that many feel at their vision, these insects are able to quickly infest all environments and, in particular, quickly destroy all food supplies.

But why do cockroaches take refuge in the house, what are the causes that can favor their presence and how to keep them away with natural remedies?

L’cockroach infestation it must never be underestimated since this insect, in addition to multiplying very quickly, can represent a danger both for the house itself and for its inhabitants. For this reason, if the number of specimens present should be really important, the advice is to rely on a company of disinfestation.

Natural remedies, while quite effective, are recommended for the initial stages of the infestation itself. Here are some useful tips.

Causes of cockroaches in the house: why it happens

Everyone has at least once had to manage adomestic cockroach infestationa specimen that – due to its appearance and because it is associated with the lack of hygiene in the common imagination – always generates a certain concern.

On the other hand, these insects are truly ubiquitous and there are thousands of different species, all belonging to the order of Blattodea: they are present all over the globe, except at the Poles and at heights greater than 2,000 meters, there are at least 4,000 species belonging to six different families.

Cockroaches can differ from each other in color and size, but all species show common characteristics: six legs, a leathery and flattened body and a small head with long antennae. The presence of wings varies according to the species, while all are so-called “cosmopolitan” varieties: they do not fear man and tend to colonize all his spaces. However, there are three most common types in the home:

  • Leaf fuochista (Germanic Blattella): it is the classic brown-colored cockroach, squat and with a shiny body, which gathers in groups behind furniture or in cupboards;
  • Black cockroach (Leaf orientalis): it is the most recognized cockroach within the collective imagination, as well as the largest at home;
  • Furniture cockroach (american periplateine): so called because it can damage wood, even in a serious way.

But for what reason do cockroaches enter the house? The reasons can be many:

  • Food: Cockroaches are opportunistic insects and congregate in places where they can find an abundance of food. In the houses there are not only beliefs, but also organic residues, dust and other waste very welcome to these insects;
  • Heat and humidity: cockroaches love to live in very humid and warm environments and houses, in particular the bathroom and the kitchen, offer the perfect conditions for their proliferation;
  • Hide them: the apartments offer many hiding places where you can create dens, from the hidden parts of the furniture to the crevices in the walls, passing through the skirting boards.

Because cockroaches in the house are more numerous at night

Many will have noticed that cockroaches tend to manifest themselves especially at night, when the lights are out. Sometimes you notice them when you go to the bathroom after a sudden awakening, others you hear the noise they make when chewing wood. For what reason?

Almost all cockroach species are lucifuges: they therefore struggle to tolerate light, both that of the sun and artificial lighting. Furthermore, moving at night offers them considerable advantages: it is less likely to come across predators, for example, but also to move on the most varied surfaces without getting too noticed.

Where cockroaches nest

As already mentioned, it may not be easy to spot cockroaches in the house, because their activity is mainly nocturnal. But where they tend to nestusually?

  • Rear portion of the furniture, the one resting on the walls;
  • Repaired parts of the large appliancessuch as the bottom of washing machines or the back of refrigerators;
  • Crepe nowskirting boards and holes in the fixtures;
  • Sideboards, grocery packs, old cardboard boxes;
  • Cracks between walls and plumbing pipes.

As a rule, cockroaches get access to the house through doors and windows, but also and above all through plumbing pipes. These insects can come up from the inside or, again, take advantage of the small space that exists between the pipe itself and the wall.

Dangers of cockroaches in the home

Germanic Blattella

Unfortunately, cockroaches in the house represent a danger not to underestimate. These insects, since they usually live in waste and dirt, can in fact become a vehicle for even serious illnesses. The problem is in fact that of contamination.

As they invade beliefs and places of life, they can carry pathogens and release them into food or environments. The most well-known risks include:

  • Salmonellawhen they come into contact with food;
  • Dysentery and gastroenteritis;
  • It had and intestinal worms;
  • Typhus;
  • Allergies e anaphylactic shock.

Natural remedies for cockroaches at home

But what are the natural remedies more useful to remove cockroaches from the house? There are many effective grandmother’s discoveries, but a clarification is necessary. Although they are all natural, some could cause the death of insects: consequently, not all of them could be suitable for those who, for ethical reasons, just want to simply remove these unwelcome presences.

Sugar and bicarbonate

Baking soda in a jar

Sugar e bicarbonate have always been one of the most used remedies by grandmothers to eliminate cockroaches. Insects are in fact attracted by the sweetness of this preparation but, unbeknownst to them, they also swallow large quantities of bicarbonate. The latter, reacting with the acids present in their stomachs, quickly causes their death.

Generally, small balls of sugar and bicarbonate are prepared, slightly moistened to ensure their compactness, to be scattered in the most invaded places of the house.

Neem oil

Neem oil is an effective pesticide and insect deterrent. Thanks to a molecule inside it, theazadiractina, a very powerful antiseptic that also determines its very acrid odor. Just moisten some cotton balls and spread them in the places of the house where cockroaches are likely to take refuge, to see them move quickly away from their burrows.

This oil, unwelcome by insects, also has the advantage of not being dangerous for humans or pets for external use. There will therefore be no contamination of the living spaces.

Water and sugar

For those wishing to prepare a trap, an already well-known idea for the control of wasps or flies can be proposed. To do this, simply retrieve a plastic bottle ofwater and of sugar.

You start by cutting the water bottle just below its neck, so as to obtain a sort of funnel. In the meantime, the lower half is filled with water and sugar, then the improvised funnel is positioned to close the container. In an attempt to drink, the cockroaches will fall into the water and become trapped in it.

Chilli, garlic, onion and vinegar

Another excellent deterrent is represented by a mixture of chili pepper, garlic, onion e vinegar. It starts by chopping the vegetables and adding the spices, so as to obtain a generous handful of powder. At this point, pour about 90 ml of water and 10 ml of vinegar into a bowl, add the ground coffee obtained and mix until completely dissolved.

The solution will produce a smell that is not very popular with cockroaches: it will therefore be sufficient to place bowls with the solution in different strategic points of the house.

Prevention and cleaning

In addition to the use of natural remedies, very important is thehome hygiene as a preventive method to the appearance of cockroaches. As already repeated several times, these insects are very fond of dust and dirt, where they find the ideal humidity to multiply and also residues of food or other organic substances.

It is therefore essential to thoroughly clean all environments, vacuuming dust frequently and washing all hard surfaces, even with a solution of water and bicarbonate. Again, it will be necessary seal the drafts of French windows and fix, with a coat of stucco, cracks and crevices that may be present on the walls.
