The West must close the door completely to all Russians.

This is the call from the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, in an interview with the American newspaper The Washington Post.

It is already difficult for Russian citizens to travel to, for example, the EU and the USA. However, they still have the option of applying for a visa.

And that is precisely what Zelensky wants to do away with.

“Whatever kind of Russians they are, force them to be in Russia. Then maybe they will understand it all,’ says the president.

“They will say that this war has nothing to do with them. And surely the entire population cannot be held responsible? Yes, it can. The people have elected this government and are not fighting against it. They don’t argue against it, they don’t shout at it,” says Zelensky.

Russian airlines have been banned from flying to most of Europe and North America due to the war. But a real ban on the entry of Russians, as Zelenskyj proposes, has not come about.

In the interview with The Washington Post, Zelenskyj addresses the Russians.

“You tell the whole world that it must live your way. Then you can also stay in the country yourself,’ says the president.

He adds that only by staying in Russia can the Russians influence Putin.

Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod (S) will not rule out that Zelensky’s call may come true.

“All proposals affecting Russia, sanctions and proposals to prosecute Russian war crimes. We are open to discussing all this with our European and North American colleagues,’ says Jeppe Kofod in a comment.

“Now that we stand together, we can make a difference in the defense of Ukraine and the freedom of all of us, so we will of course take such proposals with us and discuss them.”

Russia attacked Ukraine almost five and a half months ago.

It happened when President Vladimir Putin announced in the early morning hours of February 24 that he had launched a “special military operation”.

When Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, it was initially with a broad offensive that also targeted the capital, Kyiv.

However, the Russian forces did not succeed in capturing the city, and since then their focus has been primarily on eastern and southern Ukraine.
