China Theater replaces “racist” logo

– The criticism against the logo is that they have used a classic racist image of an Asian man. It has a very long and violent history here in the West, regardless of what intention Chinateatern had when they decided to use it, says cartoonist Lisa Wool-Rim Sjöblom to The cultural news.

The log previously had a picture of a Chinese man with a hat and long moustache, but that picture has now been removed. However, the font is the same as before.

Chinateatern explains the decision in an email to SVT.

“We started the change work when it was brought to our attention that it felt offensive. It was never our intention, we apologize for doing so regarding the design of the logo,” writes the theatre’s operations manager Ulrica Ågren.

The China Theater was designed in 1926 by the architect Albin Stark, who drew inspiration from his stay in China in 1922.
