China airs Korean drama for the first time in 6 years… ‘Han Han-ryeong’ will be released

The drama ‘Saimdang Light’s Diary’ (2017, photo), starring Lee Young-ae, was broadcast in China. It is the first time in six years since the Korean War, a Korean drama has been introduced through an official drama broadcasting platform in China, such as over the air or Internet TV.

According to the Korean Cultural Center on the 5th, a dubbed version of ‘Saimdang Light’s Diary’ was broadcasted by Hunan Entertainment, a local broadcasting company affiliated with Hunan Satellite TV, on the evening of the evening before. The same drama was also uploaded in Chinese dubbed version on ‘Mango TV’, an IPTV (Internet TV) channel of Hunan Satellite TV.

In the midst of the THAAD (high altitude missile defense system) conflict, Korean dramas have not been aired at all through platforms that have not been officially licensed, such as China’s airwaves and Internet TV since the second half of 2016.

Mango TV purchased the rights to Saimdang in November 2016, right after Hanhan-ryeong, under the simultaneous broadcasting plan with Korea, but the simultaneous broadcasting between Korea and China was not successful due to the THAAD conflict.

The Korean Cultural Center in China explained, “Saimdang has completed the deliberation of the Chinese Optoelectronics Administration (broadcasting regulatory authority), but it has not been able to broadcast and online services due to the Korean government.

Last month’s movie ‘Oh! Moonhee’ was released in China for the first time in six years as a Korean film, and the bar is being lifted in the drama area as well. However, in the same month, a member of the idol group EXO was scheduled to appear at the Tencent Music Awards but was canceled, so it is expected that the Chinese authorities will accept Korean culture in a limited and selective manner.
