Chieftec Stallion 3: rich space and strong cooling

Chieftec Stallion 3 is significantly larger than a regular middletower, which can be very important at this time. Today’s graphics cards are so long that they don’t have to fit into older cabinets at all, and the new generation will be even more voracious, so you can count on larger coolers if it’s not water cooling. Stallion 3 allows you to fit up to 430 mm long cards and also offers them support so that it does not depend only on the slot of the board and the blank.

According to its name, the new Chieftec Stallion 3 is based on two older versions, so we can consider it the result of gradual evolution. At the same time, it differs from the Stallion 2 model mainly in that it does not have a glass-covered front at the front, but an air-permeable panel with a dust filter. Inside, we won’t come across such an overly large card holder, but otherwise they are very similar models.

The manufacturer itself draws attention to four 120mm RGB backlit fans compatible with various LED synchronization platforms, a glass side panel, a remote control for the built-in module (fan and RGB settings) and finally an RGB backlight that also allows synchronization, but no longer in the fans, but in the two strips delimiting the front buttons and ports.

Chieftec Stallion 3 is a cabinet designed especially for those who do not want to be surprised by the fact that they will have nowhere to place a new powerful component. Here it means mainly (graphic) cards, but this box can also hold large E-ATX format boards, which does not only mean a slightly overgrown ATX, but a real E-ATX with a standard size of 305 × 330 mm. Depending on the design of the base plate, the location of the mounting holes depends on the free space, as the tray itself is very large.

In other respects, however, we have nothing out of the ordinary, we have seen the DF-908 fan speed controller several times in Chieftec cabinets, and then it is a common matter with a glass side cabinet, limited equipment for storage devices, orientation on water cooling or cooling overall. The basic equipment includes four RGB backlit 120mm fans.

Cabinet processing

Stallion 3 has a fairly austere design for the game cabinet, behind which you can see the Chieftec’s handwriting. The selected materials here include 0.6 mm SPCC steel, hard black plastic, tempered glass and then also metal perforated panels in the top and front panel. Both can be removed quickly, just press and release them at the top or front edge, so we can then perform a quick cleaning of their foam filters, for which it will be best to use a vacuum cleaner.

The front panel offers us two connectors USB 2.0 and 3.0, respectively USB 3.2 Gen 1, to be exact. Between them are two usual 3.5mm audio connectors for headphones and a microphone, and we already have buttons at the bottom. All of them have only a minimal stroke and their functions are obvious from the pictograms, so it is clear that we have a button between the reset and the switch to control the backlight and two more to slow down or speed up the fan speed. These are buttons firmly connected to the fan speed controller DF-908.

The left glass side with a dark touch will provide a view of the entire interior, where, of course, the most backlit components stand out. From this point of view, however, we can notice the profile of the plastic superstructure, ie the upper and front panels, which decrease backwards or downwards, and we also have relatively high plastic legs, thanks to which air can flow to the source and any lower fan. At the same time, the manufacturer in specifications does not even mention.

On the opposite side, we see the same thing, only the side panel is all metal and, unlike the glass, it has a small handle at the back, thanks to which it can be pulled out more comfortably. The glass has nothing like that, and if it can’t be easily released from its place, all we have to do is take a flat-blade screwdriver and do a little bit in the place of the levers for the securing pressure screws. So the manufacturer could have thought of that.

At the top of the cabinet, we have another perforated metal panel, which is made exactly the same as the front one, so it is possible to quickly click it out and clean it or get to the fan positions. In front, we have a slightly recessed storage area for any use.

On the opposite side, we see two dust filters, of which only the one under the source can be described as suitably made due to user friendliness. Thanks to the plastic frame, it can be easily extended and retracted, while the filter under the fan position is simply in the form of a piece of perforated plastic, which likes to fall out, does not hold properly and is simply an example of a cheap solution.

At least we have rubber pads on our plastic legs so that the hard floor cabinet won’t rattle.
