In a year marked by challenges comes one of the most incredible and colorful for sports lovers. This Friday the Gran Canarias Hardest Climb will be held, an action promoted by the Gran Canaria Tourist Board, which will be hosted by the spectacular mountain port in the southeast of the island that connects the neighborhoods of La Pasadilla and Cazadores.
Gran Canaria, a paradise for cyclists, is home to one of the most demanding mountain passes in the world, which begins in Ingenio (at an altitude of 335 meters) and ends at Pico de Las Nieves, at 1,940 meters at the peak of the island, for a total of 23 kilometers. For this challenge, the section with the greatest difficulty of said port has been selected, which adds a total of 5.2 kilometers and 600 meters of accumulated positive slope, with slopes of up to 25% elevation, between the crossing of La Pasadilla and that of Hunters.
To put this hard course to the test, 4 elite athletes have been selected. The cyclist Luis ngel Mat, recent signing of the Euskaltel-Euskadi team and who has been a professional for 13 seasons, will be in charge of climbing the pass at the hands of his bicycle. Mat, a native of Malaga, has 9 participations in the Vuelta a Espaa, 6 in the Tour de France and is a specialist in mountain stages, where he has always excelled in the competitions in which he has participated in his long career.
To equalize forces, three runners will be the ones who will fight against Luis Angel Mat. Adidas team athletes Chema Martnez, Sheila Avils and Pablo Villa will take over to face the cyclist on this vertical path. Thus, each one of them will cover approximately 1.7 kilometers with 200 meters of positive unevenness, in which they will squeeze themselves to the maximum in this particular three against one.
Pablo Villa, current champion of the Transgrancanaria, will be in charge of starting the challenge together with Luis Angel Mat. The runner Leon will be relieved by the Catalan Sheila Avils, double world champion in the Sky Runner World Series, and the last post will be performed by the Madrilenian Chema Martnez, one of the best long distance runners in the history of Spanish athletics who in recent years has outstanding in his participation in trail races.
The Gran Canaria Tourist Board will promote this action by recording a report that will be broadcast at a later date and in which the winners of the challenge will be discovered. Who will reach the top first? Three trail runners and a cyclist will put the toughest mountain pass in Europe to the test in Gran Canaria, a favorite destination for practicing outdoor sports, with the Gran Canarias Hardest Climb.
