Suara.com – Development is indeed different for every child, but parents must know the signs that a child is experiencing speech delay or is late in speaking which must be addressed immediately.

Eka Hospital Cibubur Child Development Consultant, dr. Lies Dewi N, Sp.A(K) said that before speaking fluently children will first know some vocabulary.

“Speech delay is a condition experienced by infants and children which causes them to experience speech and language delays. Often, even though they understand when someone is speaking, it is very difficult to pronounce and get the word out again,” said dr. Lies via information received by suara.com, Monday (8/5/2023).

The doctor who is also a Neuropediatrician explained that even though it seems trivial, speech delay can interfere with a child’s growth and development because it is difficult to get words out or speak.

But unfortunately, very few parents recognize signs of speech delay in children, which results in treatment being too late.

The following are signs that a child is late in speaking to watch out for, according to Dr. Lies that parents should know:

1. At the age of 12 months, children cannot babble or babble yet and have not used their limbs to communicate, such as pointing with a finger.
2. At the age of 16 months, the child has not been able to express a word properly and just continues to babble meaningless words.
3. 24 months, the child has not been able to say sentences consisting of 2 words and the total vocabulary he has mastered is less than 15 words.
4. Loss of ability to speak or socialize at any age.

“These characteristics are also called red flags of children’s speech development and can indicate a child has experienced a speech delay. However, to know exactly what causes it, you still need a diagnosis from a doctor,” concluded Dr. Lies.
