The date of the Z Event for the 2021 edition is official. It will take place from October 29 to 31, 2021. Internet users will therefore be able to drop subs and donations to their favorite streamers and streamers, for a good cause. The association highlighted this year is Action Against Hunger.
It’s go again. This year again, the Z Event will be held, and this despite the relative persistence of the coronavirus epidemic in France, although the spread of the disease has been in free fall for several weeks. Adrien Nougaret, alias ZeratoR, the organizer of the event, announced on Thursday October 14 on his Twitch channel that his annual charity challenge will take place from October 29 to 31, 2021 for the benefit of Action Against Hunger.

What is the Z Event?
For those who are not very familiar with what the Z Event is, it is a marathon of video games and streaming for about fifty hours. The Z Event is certainly not the first of its kind, but it has become in a few years one of the most followed, in France and in the world. During this challenge, personalities from the web, but not always, are gathered in the same room to collect donations for the benefit of a cause.
To achieve this, each videographer hosts his Twitch channel and encourages his audience to donate a few euros. The activities are varied: it can be single or multiplayer games, discussions, live events, quizzes, Draw, it’s won! And so on. In order to make it as fun as possible, streamers set levels that require them to complete the related instructions within the year.
In 2020, Amnesty International was chosen to take advantage of the notoriety of the Z Event. More than 5.7 million euros had been collected during the event. It was then a record. Previously, the Z Event highlighted the Institut Pasteur (over 3.5 million euros in 2019), Médecins Sans Frontières (over one million euros in 2018), The Red Cross (500,000 euros in 2017) and Save The Children (170,000 euros in 2016).
The Z Event 2021 program
The 2021 edition of the Z Event had been suggested on the organization’s official Twitter account, falsely asking Zerator about the date of the event, October 11. The message, retweeted “innocently” by Zerator, had been followed by a few messages of the organizer promising a big announcement on the evening of October 14, without specifying its content.
This year, the challenge involves 49 streamers: Alexclick, AlphaCast, aminematue AngleDroit, Antoine Daniel, Bob Lennon, CaMaK, chowh1, DamDamLive, Deujna, DFG, Doigby, Domingo, Etoiles, Gius, GoB, Gom4rt, Gotaga, Inoxtag, Jean Massiet , Jeel, Jiraya JLAmaru, JLFakemonster, JLTomy, Joueur du Grenier, Kameto, Kenny, Lapi, LeBouseuh, Lege, LittleBigWhale, Locklear, Maghla, Michou, mistermv, MoMaN, Mynthos, NtK_TV, Ponce, RebeuDeter, Sardaryzi, TPK, Trinity, Ultia, Xari and ZeratoR. Some other streamers, however, will not be in the game, such as Squeezie.
In 2020, given the very precarious health situation in France – there was no vaccination available yet – the organization said to require participants a negative PCR test for the 85 people involved (videographers, technical staff, etc.), wearing a mask when traveling, prior confinement upstream, the use of hydroalcoholic gel and the ban on returning to the premises in the event of exit.
It remains to be seen what is planned for this year, but the health situation has changed a lot and it is likely that the rules will be relaxed, without giving rise to a cluster. Last year, the Z Event had to be organized both face-to-face and remote, not everyone being able to be there for obvious reasons of health risk. In 2021, the Z Event will be completely face-to-face, in the south of France.
A special feature of this year, it will be preceded the day before by a concert with several artists in a hall with a capacity of 300 to 400 seats. The concert will be broadcast on Twitch. Tickets for spectators will be chargeable and funds will go into the fundraiser for Action Against Hunger. Artists announced for the October 28 concert include PV Nova, LittleBigWhale, LEJ (Lucie, Elisa, Julie), Kikesa and Fianso
New this year for the #SEVENT2021, we are organizing a CONCERT the day before the event with artists who have responded to this premiere, which therefore makes ZEVENT a two-part event, it will obviously be broadcast on Twitch live! 💚 pic.twitter.com/j8UjcQg5rn

A Z Event 2021 after the leak that affected Twitch
The Z Event 2021 takes place in a particular context. The Twitch platform, which actually hosts the videographers’ channels, has been the target of a major data breach. Yes passwords were not exposed, from financial data relating to certain stars of the site – many of whom are French-speaking – have been put online. We also learned about the existence of an important confidential project (Vapor) and the inner workings of a secret that has often intrigued the Twitch community.
The revelations about the earnings of some Twitch celebrities have also reignited a controversy over the tax practices that exist in the streaming industry. Several stars of the French scene are indeed singled out for their exile in Malta which allows them to benefit from good tax optimization – not to say evasion. Their presence at the Z Event could be a subject of controversy as Zerator rightly rejects this kind of practices.
The subject had been mentioned by Zerator, following the leak: ” I take this opportunity to say that I find it surprising to live in Malta all year round and yet participate in events like the Z Event “. But obviously, the subject will not go further on his side, while he underlines the shift in the attitude of some guests: ” I’m not a judge of anyone and I will continue to invite these streamers because the Z Event is an event that is far beyond me and no longer just a gathering of pals, but for me it is inconsistent. »
The leak also highlighted the extreme imbalance in terms of parity among the top streamers. There are indeed only 3 women out of the 100 highest paid streamers in the world. This observation echoes a controversy that marked the 2019 edition of the Z Event. A finding on Twitter had quickly escalated, while a user noted a low parity and a lack of diversity among the guests. There were only 8 women out of the 54 guests. However, it was however better than previous years, or the imbalance was even more pronounced.
