We are waiting for changes in connection with the implementation of emergency calls. From the Orange announcement, we learn what they will consist of. The operator explains that there is nothing to be afraid of. The changes concern the termination of the 3G network.

Due to the fact that Orange plans to start phasing out the 3G network as early as September 2023, it becomes necessary to change the way emergency calls are made. All this because for a long time they were implemented in the 2G or 3G network. After dialing the emergency number, the phone switched to the lower generation network, and then the connection was established. It will be different now.

Orange informs you how the emergency call scheme works. The caller can dial one of the following emergency numbers: 112, 989, 997, 998, 999, 984, 985, 986, 987, 991, 992, 993, 994, 995, 996. what device he uses connects to the appropriate network.

If the caller uses the LTE network, the call goes through the packet network (EPC) to the IMS platform. There, a connection is established between the caller and the recipient of the call. Using the LRF (Location Retrieval Function), GMLC (Gateway Mobile Location Center) and PLI CBD (Location and Information Platform with a Central Database) caller location is determined. The last step is to call the selected emergency number.

It is therefore a rather complicated process, which can take a relatively long time, which is especially valuable in an emergency situation. Orange’s declaration shows that the time to establish a connection in the LTE network is approx. 50 percent. shorter than in the case of 2G/3G networks. Sometimes those seconds can make a difference.

To make emergency calls over a 4G network, you must have a device that supports VoLTE on your network. In addition, of course, you must be within range of a 4G network. However, if this fails, don’t worry – the connection will be established in 2G/3G technology.
