Centro Regional Council defends new airport north of the Tagus River – Aviação

The Centro Regional Council (CRC) defended this Tuesday the location of a new airport “north of the Tagus River” as it is the one that “best serves” the interests of the country and the region.

“Everything indicates that the location north of the Tagus River is the one that best serves national and regional interests, showing comparative advantages compared to the other solutions under study”, says the CRC, in a motion approved unanimously at a meeting held in Coimbra, at the headquarters of the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development of the Centre.

The regional body led by Paulo Fernandes, mayor of Fundão, highlights the importance of “a location of excellence given its proximity to road accessibility”, such as the A1, A23, A13 and A15, as well as railways.

At this point, he highlights “the agreements with the new high-speed route, Linha do Norte, Linha da Beira Alta and Linha da Beira Baixa”, in addition to the fact that the recommended location “may place the new airport close to a greater number of headquarters municipalities, without being more than 30 minutes away from Lisbon, reaching around 4.5 million people within a 75-minute radius”.

On the other hand, the solution advocated by the Centro Regional Council contributes “decisively to raising the country’s territorial cohesion indices”, by allowing the construction of the airport “closest, in relative terms, to the NUT III with the lowest demographic density”.

The CRC also understands that the location north of the Tagus is “a more sustainable solution”, constituting the new airport as an “investment that can minimize the financial impact for the country”, benefiting from “a long-term vision”.
