Some of the world’s leading carmakers will cut production this month due to a lack of chips. The move was announced, for example, by the Japanese companies Toyota Motor and Nissan Motor and the American company Ford Motor, writes the Reuters agency. The domestic Škoda Auto also faces the same problem.
Toyota, for example, said it would limit production of Tundra vans at its Texas plant. However, she did not specify how many cars will be affected by this restriction.
Leading automotive chip manufacturers, such as NXP Semiconductor, point out that car production has recovered faster than expected from the COVID-19 pandemic, so they have difficulty meeting demand.
In addition, chip suppliers are registering high demand from electronics manufacturers, such as laptops, whose sales support the expansion of work from home. The situation in the chip sector is also complicated by the decision of the United States to blacklist China’s largest chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), writes Reuters.
The Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker Škoda Auto stated that it is facing a shortage of chips, which could lead to the interruption or reduction of production of some models. It thus confirmed the information to the weekly Škodovácký odborář, according to which the lack of chips was caused by the pandemic and the growth in demand.
“Due to the failure of semiconductor supplies in the supply chain of the entire Volkswagen Group, Škoda Auto will also face a shortage of this component in the coming months,” said Škoda Auto spokeswoman Martina Gillichová. According to her, changes in production volumes cannot be ruled out.
