The problem of car theft is one of the plagues of our country, but obviously not only. Unfortunately, there are many cases of stolen cars, the episodes do not cease despite the new technologies and the new generation of anti-theft devices, the thieves become more and more experts and ‘in step with the times’.
The evolution of the electronic systems of modern cars does not scare and does not block criminals, in the last ten years we can say that they have been stolen more than a million vehicles, a truly alarming number. Last year, we talked about it, we saw a decrease in thefts due to the pandemic and the lockdown, but unfortunately in the first 5 months of 2021 the episodes have increased again.
Unfortunately, with the growth of stolen cars, the percentage of recovery also decreases of the same in Italy, which reaches 38%. Almost all vehicles subject to theft then disappear virtually into thin air, leaving no trace. These are the data that emerge thanks to LoJack Italia and its Dossier on Car Theft (analysis of the information provided by the Ministry of the Interior).
We know very well, as we have already said at the beginning, that 2020 was a special year also with regard to car thefts, which have decreased a lot, obviously the decrease is due to the pandemic and the lockdown, since most of us were forced to stay at home.
Vehicle abductions in 2020 were in all 75,000, with a decrease of 24% compared to 2019; recoveries have undergone a new contraction of 26%, going from 38,000 to 28,000 in 2020. Today practically 2 out of 3 stolen cars disappear, never returning to their owner. For the past 10 years I have been statthe 1,005,778 vehicles stolen and never found again, crazy. In particular, there are 682,805 cars, the others are motorcycles, scooters, off-road vehicles, light commercial vehicles and heavy vehicles.
The Campania is the region in which the most thefts occur, the Lazio on the other hand, the one where the percentage of recovery of stolen vehicles is lower. Also Puglia, Sicily and Lombardy on the podium of the regions most affected by these unpleasant episodes.
The most stolen cars? The Fiat Panda always remains at the top of the ranking with 7,415 thefts, then there are the 500 (6,889), Fiat Punto (5,252), Ypsilon (2,930) and the Volkswagen Golf queen (1,491). SUVs are becoming more and more interesting for thieves today, Nissan Qashqai is the most stolen, followed by Range Rover and Hyundai Tucson.
