Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 i EOS-1D X Mark III

Upgrading based on user feedback and the success of the EOS R3, Canon’s latest firmware takes the EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III to the next level

Canon Europe has announced a firmware update for EOS R5 (firmver v1.50), EOS R6 (firmver v1.50) i EOS-1D X Mark III (firmver v1.60). Following the recent launch of the EOS R3, a powerful sports and reportage photography machine, Canon is enhancing its line of professional cameras with enhanced detection, seamless file transfer and optimized lens support.

Unrivaled detection for subject tracking

On both the EOS R5 and EOS R6, this upgrade provides enhanced subject recognition. Users of these devices will now be able to choose “vehicles” as the main entity. Inheriting this feature from the EOS R3, these devices can now track race cars and motorcycles. The upgrade also improves overall AF tracking of people, with improved eye and face detection, even when the subject is wearing a mask, and also adds body detection. Enhancing detection within the EOS-1D X Mark III for winter sports, the new firmware provides improved head detection for subjects wearing ski goggles and helmets.

Simplified operation for optimized workflows

When it comes to professional photographers, the camera should work as an extension of their body, with flawless and intuitive functionality that will help them capture the shot. This upgrade gives EOS R5 and EOS R6 owners the ability to set a custom white balance in Live View mode, optimizing manual white balance control.

On all models, the upgrade ensures that photographers cannot transfer files by mistake by pressing the multi-controller when the “Transfer with SET” option is set for FTP transfer. Previously, the EOS-1D X Mark III used separate buttons for voice memos and image grading, but thanks to the newly added settings, users can use a single button to perform both functionalities at the same time.

Improved lens support

As the line of RF lenses continues to grow, photographers are able to open up new possibilities with their cameras. Thanks to this latest upgrade, the EOS R5 is now compatible with Canon’s EOS VR SYSTEM and RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens, allowing content creators to easily capture immersive virtual reality shots. The upgrade also provides continuous manual support for the RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM[1], even if AF is selected.

Firmware updates for EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III will be available for download from December 2, 2021 from local online support centers:
