The fact is that the climate in Canada, as in other countries of the world, is changing. In recent years, they have been dealing with extreme heat waves, forest fires and floods across the country. Aware of climate change, the Government, as well as all other levels of government, municipalities, regions and provinces have been developing and planning how to implement adaptation measures for years.

The Canadian government recently presented its first climate change adaptation strategy, which was announced as early as 2020. Almost all of Canada participated in the development of this strategy, and it consists of investments and new construction standards to protect the community and build a strong economy.

Specific goals in five key areas are: disaster resilience, health and well-being, nature and biodiversity, infrastructure, economy and workers. The strategy also states the goals for mobilizing and harmonizing the activities of the entire society in the short term.

As stated in over a period of five years, 1.1 billion euros will be invested in financing flood-resistant public infrastructure.

By implementing the new measures, the federal government hopes to reduce expenditures due to natural disasters. New flood and fire-safe building standards alone could save up to 4.7 billion Canadian dollars a year, according to the country’s government.

To reduce the risk of forest fires, 284 million Canadian dollars will be invested, while 164.2 million will be determined to increase resilience against floods, and as much as 489.1 million will go to the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.

The presentation of the strategy for adapting to the changed climate met with great approval from environmental activists and almost all citizens of this country.
