Campus track laying: In the longest tram tunnel in the Czech Republic, workers have started laying them

“I am very pleased that we are still succeeding in keeping our work schedule. Currently, most of the backfills and a large part of the surface treatment above the tunnel are completed. Workers are finishing the terminus and also the West Gate stop. It is already covered, it is waiting for the installation of escalators and elevators. In addition, planting of greenery began.

It will be planted on two dozen species of trees and shrubs. Specifically, 300 pieces of trees and 2,000 pieces of shrubs, “said the mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková.

At present, the tracks are already located at the final station at Netroufalek and on the original line at the Osová stop. The tram superstructure is open in these places, so the tracks are laid in gravel on wooden or concrete sleepers. However, maintenance cars will drive into the tunnel, so there will be different rails.

“Due to the entry of maintenance vehicles, grooved rails will be laid in the tunnel, which are used where trams run on the common road with cars. The rails differ both in their height, they are slightly higher and in shape. Laying will take place from the bottom of the tunnel.

The rails are first placed in place, their position, radii are adjusted and they are folded so-called dry. Subsequently, the baseboards will be assembled with fasteners and the rails will be definitively concreted in, ”explained Miloš Havránek, General Director of the Brno City Transport Company.

Approximately 350,000 kilograms of rails will be used for the entire construction. These are just rails, if the clamping systems and sleepers were included, the number would be several times higher. Under ideal conditions, laying will take three months. Subsequently, the builders will start installing security equipment, switch control, camera system, lighting, information systems or fire safety equipment.

The new tram line for 1.4 billion crowns will be put into operation at the end of this year. The transport company of the city of Brno expects to use new two-way trams Škoda ForCity Smart 34, which will be supplied by the manufacturer Škoda Transportation.
