The cooperation between Leica and Xiaomi has reached a new milestone: The Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which was presented in China at the end of April, is now coming to Germany in limited quantities.

The cooperation between the smartphone giant Xiaomi and the German optics specialist Leica is already bearing amazing fruit, although it is only a year old (for the announcement). Xiaomi’s current 13 series delivers outstanding image quality (to test) and the 12S model caused a stir in 2023 because Leica packed everything that was technically possible back then.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra is in the tradition of the 12S and is more strongly influenced by Leica than any other Xiaomi smartphone. The back with the grained leather texture (according to the manufacturer it is “antibacterial nanotech silicone leather”) and the distinctive circular camera module is a homage to the classic look of the Leica M series. The wide metal frame provides stability and ensures that the Xiaomi 13 Ultra cannot be bent. It is protected against water according to IP68.

The centerpiece is the quadruple camera system with focal lengths of 12 mm (ultra wide angle), 23 mm (wide angle), 75 mm (3x telephoto) and 120 mm (5x telephoto). Striking: three of the cameras have a larger aperture than F2.0 in order to achieve more light and a shallow depth of field and to enable faster shutter speeds.

The main optics also has a two-stage aperture between F1.9 and F4.0 for playing with the depth of field. The 50 megapixel sensor is extraordinarily large for a smartphone at 1 inch, it is the Sony IMX989, which also sets the tone in other camera flagships (Vivo X90 Pro, Xiaomi 13 Pro). For the other three focal lengths, Xiaomi relies on Sony’s IMX858, which also has a high resolution of 50 megapixels, but is significantly smaller.

Display, SoC, Connectivity

Besides the camera, Xiaomi doesn’t let anything burn with its ultra smartphone. The display is 6.7 inches in size and has a super-fine resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels, and the refresh rate is a dynamic 120 Hertz. Among them, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, currently the most powerful processor for Android smartphones, sets the pace.

The connectivity is not quite complete, the modern short-range radio standard Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is missing. The modern USB port according to standard 3.2, which also supports DisplayPort, is positive. The new WiFi standard 6E is also included.

Price not yet known

With a weight of almost 230 grams and the powerful camera unit that protrudes more than 3 millimeters, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra is not a smartphone for tight pockets. It is above all a technical feasibility study with which Xiaomi and Leica show what they can do. This is also shown by the limited number of pieces: Exact numbers were not communicated, but we picked up the number 1,000 as the upper limit. Xiaomi didn’t want to reveal the prices either, but it’s clear that the Ultra can’t be cheaper than the 13 Pro (RRP 1,299 euros).
