Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has emphasized on the need to adopt basin-based approach in water management of transboundary rivers along with improved water management in the country.
He said that in order to meet the common challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, we must exchange the combined strengths of good practice, knowledge and technology. Basin based approach should be adopted in transboundary river management.
He made the remarks in a video message broadcast at a two-day water conference in Kumamoto, Japan, on the theme “Water – the best use for sustainable development and the next generation”.
Describing water as essential for life, the Prime Minister said it is fundamental for promoting a culture of sustainable development and peace. We need to ensure proper water management to ‘recover’ from the ongoing Kavid-19 epidemic.
He said that they are indebted to the future generations for fulfilling the international commitments on water including water related issues in SDGs.
“We must empower our youth to take the lead in efficient and sustainable inclusive water management,” he added.

Referring to an event held in 2016, he said he was a member of the UN High Level Panel on Water. Then the ‘call to action’ step has been taken.
