BYD Seal has become cheaper in China by up to 11% to CZK 565,000. How long could he be in Europe?

China wants to conquer the European market with its electric cars. In recent years, their technical level has been improving significantly, China is number one in battery technologies and in their production, they have also worked extensively on design, and the quality of cars is also improving. Most of the European car companies will have a lot to do to keep up with China, and it looks like it could be a big problem for the Japanese ones, who literally slept through the introduction of electric cars. As the creator of basically the first successful somewhat popular electric car, the Leaf, Nissan has hardly moved anywhere since then. Chinese BYD but it already sells its cars in several European countries and the next model should be a sedan Sealwhich is primarily a competitor for the Tesla Model 3. Interestingly, Tesla is more successful in China with its Model 3 and sold 42.8 thousand M3s there in the last quarter, while BYD reached only 19.6 thousand Seals.

The aggressive pricing policy of Tesla, when it dramatically reduced the prices of its cars, is also to blame, to which the Chinese automakers had to respond willy-nilly. However, BYD continues to react and further lowers the price of its Seal, and as part of a mild “facelift” (the car went on sale in July 2022), it cuts the price by another 23 thousand yuan (CZK 71 thousand) for most versions. At the same time, it presents a luxury version with the longest range. The Chinese offer looks like this with ranges according to China’s very imprecise CLTC standard.
  • Elite (550km) – 189,800 yuan (CZK 565,000)
  • Prestige (550km) – 202,800 yuan (626,000 CZK)
  • Prestige (700km) – 222,800 yuan (688,000 CZK)

It is a car with dimensions of 4800×1875×1460 mm with a wheelbase of 2920 mm. In China, it can have a 61.44kWh or 82.56kWh battery and 150kW DC charging. In Europe, however, only the second 82kWh version with a Blade Battery and a range of 570 km with the rear wheel will be available, or 520-529 km for a quad bike. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h should take place in 5.9 or 3.8 seconds. It has a maximum power of 230 kW, a torque of 700 Nm and a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

But how much could it cost? As we recently demonstrated with the tiny BYD Seagull, European prices greatly exceed Chinese prices and are roughly 2.4 times higher. After all, the BYD Atto 3, which starts in China at a price of 139,800 yuan (approx. CZK 430,000), is available in Europe from approx. CZK 1.02 million. The basic model, which costs CZK 565,000 in China, would probably cost CZK 1.35 million here. For your interest, the Model 3 Standard Range is available in the Czech Republic for 1.03 million CZK (with documentation for less than 1.06 million CZK).

But only the version with a longer range will be available here, and we have the version after conversion from 688,000. After taking into account the constant 2.4, we would arrive at 1.65 million CZK with tax. And that’s not enough. From a sports sedan with a price approaching half a million, if we only look at the exchange rate conversion, we get a car 3 times more expensive. But we should find out what the final prices will be in August or September, when European sales start.
