BYD releases electric cars in Sweden – here are the models

This autumn, the electric car options will be expanded when Chinese BYD rolls into Sweden. Now the manufacturer has revealed a trio of models they are launching and that the first deliveries will come already this year. Now it is also clear what the cars will cost.

It started with MG and since then Aiways, Xpeng and Maxus have been launched. Nine are on the way in October and they are now joined by BYD.

Like MG, Hedin Bil is the dealer and when you open the order books in a month or so, three options will be offered.

The BYD Han model is a substantial sedan that measures five meters in size. Under the skin, the car has dual electric motors, one per axle, making it four-wheel drive. Together, they should be able to generate 380 kW or the equivalent of 517 horsepower, which for the gas pedal-yster should be able to be converted into accelerations from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

If we look at the battery, Han has 85.4 KWh on board, which should be enough for 521 km according to WLTP.

The battery pack is an own design with BYD’s “Blade Battery”. Unlike what most others use, these have a different chemistry and are lithium ion phosphate batteries. These have no cobalt and only a little nickel – this makes them cheaper. In addition, they must be extremely safe, can be charged to 100 percent with each charge and must also handle both high and low temperatures well.

The disadvantages of the technology are that they cannot be fast-charged as quickly – and that the energy density is lower. In terms of power for charging, BYD has not stated exactly, but it is under 150 kW.

Tang

Alongside the Han, a seven-seater SUV called the Tang will be launched. This is about the same size as a Volvo XC90, but more “combi-like” in the body. Just like Han, it involves dual engines, over 500 horsepower and a battery pack with its own blade batteries. However, the energy is not enough for more than 400 km. If you want to start from a red light, the acceleration is 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Both Han and Tang describe as premium products with the latest technology.

Price: BYD Tang has a starting price of SEK 806,900. Going forward, private leasing will be offered, but how the arrangement will be and what kind of monthly cost you can expect is not yet clear.

Alongside the two more luxurious options, BYD is also launching the Atto 3. This is a C-segment crossover that, unlike the others, is front-wheel drive. Interestingly, the model is based on a more modern platform than the Han and Tang and this is prepared for 800-volt technology.
However, this is not Atto 3 built with – but here it is more scaled down.

The engine at the front has an output of 150 kW/204 horsepower and thanks to 60.5 kWh batteries it should be possible to get up to 42 miles on one charge.

Exactly what the various cars will cost is not clear, but sales will take place at Hedin Bil’s facilities from October. Considering how well the Hedin got on the MG, it wouldn’t be surprising if an alternative like the Atto 3 quickly climbs the sales charts. Price tag and availability of cars will decide. BYD states that the first cars will begin to be delivered already in the fourth quarter of this year.

A big difference compared to alternatives like Xpeng or Nio is that BYD is a large established automotive giant. They have been on the European market since 1998 and have a wide range in production. From buses and forklifts down to cars and electric bikes. They also have a strength in that they develop and produce the entire battery themselves

As a car manufacturer, with electrification, they have increased their volume enormously in recent years. This year, they expect to sell close to two million plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars.
