Budkowski: Traction grip is good

Marcin Budkowski, CEO of Alpine F1, shared his first impressions of the new track in Jeddah, and also emphasized that in 2021 his teams completed their tasks.

Marcin Budkowski: “To be honest, it’s amazing that the training went without incident. Last night, walking along the track with Fernando Alonso and his engineers, we thought that the training could go according to an interesting scenario, but so far everything has been done without prejudice to technology. Although it is unlikely to be so throughout the weekend, because the riders will begin to attack more aggressively. But the track here is great!

We were worried, not knowing what the level of grip would be, because the asphalt surface here is completely new. But it turned out that everything is fine with the clutch, so there are no particular worries. It looks like the tires are working fine too. But we will get more accurate information during the second training session, when we plan to carry out long series of circles.

Even at the beginning of the week, the track was very dusty, since work was still going on here, but by Friday, surprisingly, the organizers were able to clean the surface well.

When our riders studied the track on the simulator, we noticed a curious moment: if usually two or three laps are enough for them to get comfortable on a new track, but in the case of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit it took seven or eight laps. The fact is that it takes confidence to attack with full force, go close to barriers and not slow down in slow turns.

And today we saw that all the riders gradually added, and the results of passing the circles are steadily improving.

At this stage of the season, we have mixed feelings: on the one hand, we have almost achieved the goals that were in front of us: Esteban Ocon won in Hungary, and Fernando climbed to the podium in Qatar. Our team takes 5th place in the Constructors’ Cup, but still, at the beginning of the season, we could have performed better.

Nevertheless, the season is not bad, especially considering that we have practically not upgraded the car for the third year. But in other areas we have made significant progress, so we look forward to next year, when we will have a new engine, a completely new chassis, and Formula 1 will switch to a new technical regulation. All this instills optimism. ”
