The Bangladesh Railway Authority has taken a master plan to operate the Eastern Railway broad gauge train by ending the meterage age. As part of the modernization of the railway communication system, a project was undertaken to build a 460 km double line dual gauge railway line from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar via Chittagong. In the meantime, its study is also in the final stage. In this situation, the construction work of the railway line will start, said the concerned engineer of the railway. As part of this initiative of the Railways, the operation of Eastern Railway Broad Gauge Train has gone one step further.
Although broad gauge trains have been running in the western part of the country since the beginning of train operations in the country, it has not been possible to operate broad gauge trains as there are no broad and dual gauge double lines in the eastern part. Only meter gauge train was running.
The present government has taken a master plan to establish broad gauge and dual gauge double lines of Eastern Railway for the operation of broad gauge trains in both the regions as part of the modernization of rail communication system. According to the engineering department of the Eastern Railway, the construction work of 82 km broad gauge, dual gauge double line from Akhaura to Laksam is in full swing. The rest of the Dhaka-Chittagong line broad gauge dual gauge double line will also be constructed.
Engineer Abul Kalam Chowdhury, assistant project director of the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar rail line project, said that if the railway broad gauge line is established in the eastern region, it will be possible to establish Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar rail link with Rajshahi and Khulna in the western region.
He said that although there was a broad gauge line up to Dhaka, the entire Dhaka-Chittagong route remained at meter gauge. The survey for construction of 460 km double line dual gauge railway line from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar via Chittagong is nearing completion. The main work will start soon. The project is being taken to convert the meter gauge line to dual gauge line without completely breaking it. Meanwhile, construction of Akhaura-Sylhet dual gauge line is underway.
According to the office of the director of the survey project, after the survey work of setting up Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar railway, the preparation of the investment project is underway. Negotiations are underway with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to secure funding for the project. Once the financing is confirmed, the implementation of the original project can start.
