Britain turned to Russia over a case of two Britons captured in Ukraine

The British authorities claim that convicted British citizens Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner served in Ukraine as members of the Ukrainian army and are therefore covered by the Geneva Convention. Among other things, it prohibits captured soldiers from being tried for ordinary military acts. Pro-Russian separatists from the unrecognized Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), where the trial took place, claim that the British fought in Ukraine as mercenaries.

“I can say that the British turned to us. They sent a note full of exclusively arrogant and instructive wording. The letter does not arouse the desire to cooperate in these matters,” said the Russian ambassador. The diplomat added that Britain should turn to the authorities of the Donetsk People’s Republic, where both convicts are located.

According to Reuters, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss said last week that the best way to release Aslin and Pinner was “through Ukrainians” and promised to do everything in her power. Kyiv has promised to try to secure the release of the British in exchange for Russian prisoners. Along with the two British, Moroccan Ibrahim Sadun was sentenced to death. One of the lawyers said that all three convicts intended to appeal. They have one month since the verdict on June 9.

There are also two Americans captured in Russian detainees in the People’s Republic of Donetsk (DNR), captured by Russian soldiers in Ukraine, the Russian agency Interfax wrote today. The Russians also call these two prisoners mercenaries.
