Bridges, viaducts and tunnels: here’s how to control security remotely

21/06/2022 – Strengthen the safety of bridges, viaducts and tunnels. With this objective, the National Agency for the safety of railways and road and motorway infrastructures (Ansfisa) has developed the guidelines and criteria for the technical evaluation of dynamic monitoring plans for the remote control of infrastructures.

The plan for the monitoring of bridges, viaducts and tunnels, we recall, is financed with 450 million euros from the PNRR. The resources were recently departed by the Ministry of Infrastructures between 27 managing bodies.

Bridges, viaducts and tunnels: the guidelines for monitoring

In order to obtain the resources, the managing bodies will have to present the monitoring plans, which will be evaluated by the Ministry.

To allow for transparency and uniformity of judgment, the ANSFISA Road and Highway Infrastructure Safety Directorate has developed the criteria that will guide the preparation and evaluation of the plans.

The guidelines explain that dynamic monitoring includes:
– all instrumental monitoring techniques aimed at controlling the works
– the processes of census, risk classification, security verification, surveillance e modeling also digital that allow to monitor the temporal evolution of the safety conditions and functionality of bridges, viaducts and tunnels.

Bridges, viaducts and tunnels, the objectives of the program

Ansfisa explains that the program, funded with 450 million euros, aims to achieve the following targets:
– the adoption of an integrated system of census, classification and risk management for 12,000 works of art belonging to the 1st level SNIT network;
– the instrumentation of 6,500 works among the 12,000 total works;
– the adoption of the model BIM of 200 works among the 6,500

Various factors weigh on the evaluation of the achievement of the objectives, such as the correct counting of the works. Ansfisa then illustrates how to proceed with the correct count.

Among the indications provided by Ansfisa there are also the technical area of ​​dynamic monitoring, the criteria for the design of instrumental technologies and for data processing, the requirements of the monitoring plans, the content of the intervention plans and the methods of ‘investigation.
