Bridges and viaducts, 1.15 billion euros ready for safety and replacement

The decree that will finance the extraordinary maintenance and reconstruction of the structures under the jurisdiction of the provinces and metropolitan cities has been published

20/07/2021 – Provinces and metropolitan cities will have 1.15 billion euros available to secure existing bridges and viaducts and build new ones to replace those with structural problems.

It was published in the Official Gazette on DM 7 May 2021 of the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility (MIMS) which divides 1 billion and 150 million euros (350 million for 2021, 450 million for 2022 and 350 million for 2023) between the provinces and metropolitan cities of the statute regions ordinary and of the Regions of Sardinia and Sicily. The resources were distributed on the basis of three parameters: consistency of the road network; fleet of vehicles; vulnerability of natural phenomena.

As a percentage, the funds are divided as follows:
Emilia-Romagna – 10.96%
Lombardy – 10.62%
Tuscany – 10.11%
Sicily – 8.22%
Campania – 7,6%
Piedmont – 6.83%
Veneto – 6.6%
Lazio – 6%
Calabria – 5,68%
Apulia – 5%
Abruzzo – 4,68%
Walking – 4.5%
Liguria – 3,29%
Sardinia – 3.17%
Umbria – 2,24%
Molise – 2.19%
Basilicata – 2.18%

The funds will have to be used for the making existing bridges and viaducts safe and for the construction of new bridges to replace existing ones with structural security problems. Eligible expenses include: census, risk classification, safety verification, design, construction management, testing, ongoing and final checks, structural monitoring, surveys, studies and traffic surveys.

With the publication of the Ministerial Decree of 7 May 2021, the ball passes to the Provinces and Metropolitan Cities that must start the Three-year program 2021-2023 containing the extraordinary maintenance interventions and regulatory compliance and / or reconstruction interventions, the aspects connected to the durability of the interventions, the benefits brought in terms of safety, risk reduction, quality of user traffic and the related costs time schedule of interventions.
