Breakthrough Listen has listened to 60 million systems, found nothing yet

Astrobiologists from the Breakthrough Listen project have thus published the preliminary results of their research from the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) series, according to the server Gizmodo. So far, they have found no signs of extraterrestrial intelligence toward the center of our galaxy, at least in terms of its manifestations in the radio spectrum. However, Breakthrough Listen is a ten-year project that has four years ahead of it, so it will still try its luck. After all, our galaxy contains up to 400 billion stars, so there is still room to look for.

Green Bank Observatory

The latest campaigns used Green Bank Radio Telescope in West Virginia and Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia, for which a team based in Berkeley was given around 600 hours. The Breakthrough Listen project thus received the most sensitive equipment in this campaign so far, but even that did not bear fruit.

And why was the direction to the center of the Galaxy chosen for radio listening? Simply because the density or frequency of stars gradually increases in this direction, ie the average distance between them also shortens. According to the authors, this fact could cause a faster development of technically advanced alien races capable of traveling between systems. On the other hand, in our galactic suburb, we have quite peace, while in the center it is just full of supernovae, hot clouds and other traps waiting for potential aliens.

Of course, the 60 million stars in the Breakthrough Listen survey are also estimates and do not mean that time is always set aside for one particular star and its system. Only the direction of listening was chosen and we waited for the signal, but not with the fact that we could expect a captured normal broadcast that is too weak at such a distance. Rather, it was hoped that any strong radio beacons or perhaps another very strong source of radio waves in frequencies between 0.7 and 93 GHz would be captured. However, the preliminary report only covers frequencies between 1 and 8 GHz.

It is no wonder that the project Breakthrough Listen did not find any artificial source of radio waves and as a monster there are no civilizations in the chosen direction, which thought to create an extremely strong beacon transmitting on a certain frequency and trumpeting their presence throughout the galaxy. However, signs of magnetars have been captured, which other astronomers studying this type of neutron star will certainly be interested in.
