Brazil. Former ministers and pastors targeted by warrants

The Brazilian Federal Police carried out an operation this Wednesday to investigate the alleged practice of influence peddling and corruption for the allocation of public resources at the Ministry of Education in a case involving a former minister and evangelical pastors.

According to Brazilian media, former education minister Milton Ribeiro and evangelical pastors Gilmar Santos and Arilton Moura are the target of arrest warrants. According to Folha de São Paulo, Milton Ribeiro and Gilmar Santos – both linked to Jair Bolsonaro – have already been effectively detained.

In a note, without identifying the targets of the warrants, the Federal Police informs that the operation, called Acesso Pago, identified possible indications of criminal practice for the release of public funds”.

The investigation began after the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo published in March information that pastors Gilmar Santos and Arilton Moura were allegedly intermediating requests from mayors for the allocation of public funds from the Ministry of Education in exchange for bribes, with the consent of the former minister.
