The new Bose Quiet Comfort 45 follows in the big footsteps of real classics: The predecessors Quiet Comfort 35 and QC Mark II can easily be seen as the forefathers of wireless over-ears with ANC. We smuggled the new one through our laboratory and put it through its paces.

With the QC 45, will Bose remain the go-to place for quiet travel and quiet work? The competition for over-ears with ANC is currently great and Bose even comes from in-house with the 700 series. At 400 euros, the colleague is a bit more expensive than the QC 45. As far as workmanship is concerned, the new one is a very high-quality over-ear.

Over-Ear Best List

The best over-ear headphones 2021 with Bluetooth and ANC

In our laboratory, we regularly test over-ear headphones with ANC. We present you the best models in our top 10 list of the best.

The matte plastic feels stable, and the ear and temple padding is soft and covered with synthetic leather. Practical: the auricles can be folded in. This is how the Quiet Comfort 45 can be stowed in the supplied hard case to save space.

And this is one of the most compact on the market, so that, as expected, the over-ears are perfect as travel companions. In the case we also find an audio and a USB-C charging cable. The former adapts from a 2.5 to a 3.5 millimeter jack connector.

Airy wearing comfort and very good control

But not only the case collects plus points. The headphones themselves are also lightweight at 232 grams. Sony’s competitor product WH-1000XM4 is even a little heavier at 253 grams – but is actually already considered a weight reference.

Of course, this has an effect on the wearing comfort, which is really excellent as a result. Even after being worn for a long time, nothing presses here. The airy wearing comfort is also favored by the large auricles, in which even larger eavesdroppers can find space. When it comes to controls, Bose takes the classic route and does away with touch-sensitive surfaces, which are now common.

Instead, you navigate through music using three buttons on the left ear cups, adjust the volume, accept calls or ask the smartphone assistant. Everything works so far smoothly and precisely. Sometimes the conventional way isn’t that bad after all.

On the other auricle there is only one larger button that can be used to switch between the ANC and transparency mode. Whereby ANC is always activated.

App doesn’t do the product justice

If you like, you can connect the Bose QC 45 to several devices thanks to multipairing, which is very practical. The app, on the other hand, is a tragedy, as the QC 45 has almost no functionality. We especially miss an equalizer.

We find it completely incomprehensible that you can make many other settings on the Bose 700, including the strength of the ANC. This needs improvement, especially for the price. The ANC made a good impression in the laboratory with a maximum of 30 dB and an average of 20 dB attenuation.

However, the QC 45 does not quite come close to the very good values of the 700 Bose (22 dB) and the AirPods Max (27 dB). The battery life of 19:18 hours is also good if you consider the switched on ANC. Telephony acoustics, which guarantee clear communication, play in the upper league.

We were also impressed by the very good sound quality. Here the Bose unpacks its typically neutral sound, which appears a bit sterile due to the withdrawn mid-range. Music sometimes lacks volume. The slight highlighting of the treble can also be a bit sharp and uncomfortable with claps and higher volume.

However, there is hardly any distortion, which speaks for the quality of the QC 45. With the Quiet Comfort 45, Bose has an excellent travel companion in its range that ensures peace and quiet and delivers great, neutral sound. Only the app still deserves an adjustment, the competition can do that much better.
