Borović: Unbearable increase in food prices, the state to intervene from commodity reserves

Today, the People’s Party called on the Government of Serbia to apply measures in order to protect the population and the economy from the inflationary shock that threatens to decimate the economy and bring the majority of the population to the brink of extinction.

“Urgent intervention from commodity reserves is necessary in order to at least partially amortize the growth of oil and meat prices, as well as the abolition of excise taxes on electricity and reduction of excise duties on fuel,” said Borislav Borovic, chairman of the Economy and Finance Committee of the Belgrade City Party.

“At the same time, it is necessary to increase the minimum price of labor to the level of the real minimum consumer basket, which will be previously adjusted to the minimum costs sufficient for survival and the basic costs of a family of three,” Borovic added.

Borovic stated that long-term measures imply subsidizing agriculture in proportion to the share of its share in the gross domestic product and “turning to domestic suppliers”.

“Official inflation in Serbia is 5.7 percent, but the growth of prices of consumer goods is between 20 percent and 30 percent this year alone, and that mostly affects the majority of citizens.” “The average family in Serbia spends about 40 percent of their monthly income on food, and even 55 percent on energy costs,” said Borović.

Borovic reminded that the prices of all services and consumer goods are growing, from the services of mobile operators to long-term milk in the markets.

“Meat is so expensive that it has become inaccessible to a large number of citizens. A kilogram of beef costs more than 1,000 dinars, pork 700 dinars, and chicken almost 600 dinars. The price of a liter of oil exceeded 220 dinars, and a kilogram of sugar costs 85 dinars. “All products and services that enter the minimum consumer basket are becoming more expensive, and a liter of diesel costs more than 170 dinars, while the price of electricity for the economy has doubled,” Borović concluded.
