
Born in 1953, in São Pedro do Sul, in the district of Viseu, José Pinho’s name is forever linked to books in Portugal, having founded the Folio festival, in Óbidos, Latitudes, in the same municipality, and being involved in the creation of the Network of Independent Bookshops (RELI), among many other actions for the dissemination and promotion of literature.
Also director of the 5L International Festival of Literature and Portuguese Language, in Lisbon, this month he was awarded the medal of cultural merit by the City Council of the capital, for being considered “a unique personality of the city”.Upon awarding the medal of cultural merit in Lisbon, the president of the Portuguese Association of Editors and Booksellers (APEL), Pedro Sobral, praised “the fundamental role that José Pinho has played in promoting books and reading, through innovative projects and independent groups that are still fundamental landmarks of the culture of the book and the bookshop”.
A week later, he received, from the hands of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the rank of Commander of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada.
