After having held the position from 2005 to 2020, Bob Iger returns as executive director of Disney, replacing Bob Chapek.
The announcement was made this Sunday by the company and takes effect immediately.
Iger, 71, agreed to return to lead the American company for two years, with the aim of establishing a strategy of “renewed growth”, underlined Disney, in a statement, quoted by Lusa.
The new executive director, who will also have the task of working together with the board of directors to find a successor, is pleased to be back: “I am deeply honored to be invited to lead this remarkable team again, with a clear mission focused on creative excellence to inspire generations.”
The replacement comes days after Disney reported lower-than-expected quarterly sales and profits. This year, the company’s shares have fallen about 41%, so far. Already this Monday, at the opening of the New York Stock Exchange and in reaction to the announcement of Iger’s return, Disney shares were highlighted among the rising titles, with an increase of 8 percent.
Bob Chapek took office in early 2020, when the pandemic began. He had to manage the closure of theme parks and cinemas, but also the expansion of the Disney + streaming platform.
Iger’s previous tenure as CEO of Disney included the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Fox.
