BMW iX M60 test – Can a 2700 kilo plug-in SUV be sporty?

With the new electric flagship from BMW, superlatives fall short. The BMW iX M60 produces 619 hp, goes to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and delivers 1100 Nm of torque. The seasoned BMW driver with petrol through his veins may be pleasantly surprised…

You might expect that they have calmed down at M GmbH, now that the combustion engine is getting a less and less prominent place at BMW. But that is certainly not the case. When you first press the right pedal of the iX 60M, the new top model, it is immediately clear that its aspirations extend beyond comfortable travel. M GmbH has ensured that everything is up and running in no time, after which the mastodon changes into a sprinter. Push the pedal all the way to the bottom and you’ll be pushed into your seat so hard that even the most cold-blooded driver will have palpitations.

The naked figures speak volumes: in just 3.8 seconds you reach 100 km/h and the torque is 1015 Nm. If you apply the Sport Launch control, it even becomes 1100 Nm for a short time. The power of 619 hp is transferred sovereignly to the asphalt via four 21-inch wheels. The body never gets out of balance.

The iX M60 therefore receives a lot of technical support. BMW promises that rapid acceleration never comes at the expense of traction, so acceleration is constant until the car reaches its top of 250 km/h. All systems are set for a devastating explosion of power. The iX M60 got, among other things, extra sturdy rear stabilizer bars and steered rear wheels. On wet or slippery asphalt, the interplay of engine management and chassis systems ensures optimum traction, perfect straight-line stability and safe driving characteristics.

BMW iX M60 got a movie soundtrack by Hans Zimmer

The fascinating driving experience is not accompanied by the dead silence that you are used to from an electric motor. BMW has commissioned master composer Hans Zimmer (known for the music of Interstellar, Dunkirk and Dune) to compose a sound especially for this electric top model. After pressing the start button you hear a loud hiss, as if a dragon is waking up and BMW wants to stir up the anticipation.

It seems very artificial, but we like it. Although you should not expect the experience to resemble the sound of eight, ten or twelve cylinders. While driving, the silence of the electric motor is complemented by a sound from Zimmer’s magic box. Depending on the driving program, the sound experience becomes more or less grand. All in all, a very nice way to experience the performance of the iX 60M more intensely.

Brake regeneration based on the navigation system

The high curb weight of 2659 kilograms also contributes to the smooth handling. This is due to the low center of gravity, the large 111.5 kWh battery pack is stored in the bottom. Net you have 105.2 kWh. The recovery of the braking energy is also ingenious, because it is based on the data in the navigation system. This should create an ideal mix between recovery when braking and power when accelerating.

BMW proudly reports that this leads to a range of 502 to 561 kilometers. During our test we get to 489 kilometers. Not bad, because we are regularly tempted to make optimal use of its power. The iX 50, which is under 60M in the sporty hierarchy, comes a lot further with 630 kilometers on a battery charge.

Charging is best done with the DC fast charger. The iX 60 M can handle 159 kW, which means that it can top up 150 kilometers in 10 minutes. If you want to fill the battery from 10 to 80 percent, you have to allow 35 minutes for this. You charge with 11 kW on the wallbox, which is normal, but because the battery is so large, charging also takes 11 hours.

Comfort and luxury predominate in the interior. The leather seats with integrated headrests are perfect, the Curved Display is easy to read and the operation via speech, touchscreen and iDrive works excellently. Only the crystal buttons for the seat adjustment, the rotary / push buttons and the automatic transmission are not to everyone’s taste. Such as the basic price of 135,000 euros will not be everyone’s budget.

The top variant of the BMW iX is the guy in the gym you look up to enviously because you can never match those mighty muscles. Not even if you juggle your dumbbells every day. M GmbH has made so many changes to the basic iX that its performance is at sports car level. However, this monster is also easy to tame for the untrained driver. A good, but expensive car with an excellent range.
