BMW: EV autonomy limited to 600km

A BMW executive said the brand does not plan to make electric models with an autonomy of more than 600km and will not try to reach a range of 1,000km with a single battery charge.

“1,000km is not the goal we have for our fully electric cars. We want to achieve an autonomy of 600km for fully electric cars, or 100km (on electricity) for plug-in hybrid models in everyday driving “, said David Ferufino, project leader of the BMW i4 car magazine WhichCar? from Australia.

Ferufino explained that BMW has other advantages in batteries, such as charging speed and a growing network of charging stations, and that in this way it can help owners of electric models. He added that the maximum autonomy of an electric vehicle will depend on the segment in which it is sold.

“For example, we think a 600km range would not be suitable for the BMW i3 as an urban car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, we think 600km is a very customer-friendly solution,” said the Bavarian company official.

The new BMW i4 has an estimated autonomy of 590km. According to official manufacturer data, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes on a fast 200kW charger. If this data is realistic, the driver could cover 1,000km with one 30-minute stop to charge the battery.
