Billion note for Toyota after lax reports

The United States obliges Toyota to pay just over SEK 1.5 billion in fines for violating environmental legislation. The error: The car manufacturer has been lazy with its emission reports.

The Clean Air Act relies on car manufacturers in the US market to report their emissions, and any problems that may affect what comes out of the exhaust pipe.

But over a ten-year period, between 2005 and 2015, Toyota has dragged its feet and delayed reporting defects in car emissions – and ignored telling the Environmental Protection Agency about recalls related to emissions. It reports the US Department of Justice.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the sluggishness over time has led to higher emissions and increased costs for customers – at the same time as Toyota has withdrawn money from its masking. Therefore, the Japanese car giant is now fined the equivalent of just over SEK 1.5 billion. There are a total of 78 reports, some of which were sent with a delay of eight years.

But compared to, for example, the fines that Volkswagen was forced to pay for its manipulation of emissions, Toyota’s fine is almost like change money. Between 2005-2015, Toyota sold between 1.5-2 million cars annually on the US market, and a little simplified, it can thus be said that the fine means a surcharge of approximately eighty kronor per vehicle. And Toyota has money to take away – in 2019, their revenues were SEK 2,268 billion.
