BI Participates in Slashing National Economic Growth in the Range of 3.5-4.3 Percent – Bank Indonesia (BI) has cut its projection for national economic growth in 2021. This is the impact of the delta variant which makes the Covid-19 case high again.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said economic growth is forecasted to be 3.5-4.3 percent from the previous projection of 4.1-5.1 percent.

“In the third quarter of 2021, economic growth is predicted to be lower in relation to the mobility restriction policy that must be taken by the Government to overcome the increasing spread of the Covid-19 delta variant,” Perry said in a virtual press conference, Thursday (22/7/2021).

Perry said that the decline in growth mainly occurred in household consumption due to limited mobility, amid increased social assistance stimulus by the Government, and continued strong export performance.

Meanwhile, in the fourth quarter of 2021, economic growth is predicted to pick up again, driven by increased mobility in line with accelerated vaccinations and the implementation of health protocols.

“Spatially, the decline in economic growth was recorded to be smaller outside Java, especially Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua (Sulampua), supported by strong export performance,” he said.

Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati again cut Indonesia’s economic growth target this year to 3.7-4.5 percent.

This is the second revision carried out by the government, because the first revision was carried out last February at 4.5-5.3 percent of the government’s initial target of 4.5-5.5 percent for 2021.

“Overall growth in 2021, 3.7 percent – 4.5 percent. Because, in the first quarter of 2021, Indonesia will grow minus 0.7 percent,” Sri Mulyani said in a webinar, Wednesday (7/7/2021).

This revision also responds to the government’s policy of implementing Emergency PPKM from June 3 to June 20, 2021 to reduce the rate of transmission of the Covid-19 virus.
