BGMEA seeks help to sustain growth

The garment sector has been making various efforts to sustain growth despite various challenges. Moreover, the spread of the Omicron variant worldwide has created concern among apparel entrepreneurs. In such a situation, BGMEA feels that the government’s policy support is essential for the industry to meet the challenges.

Faruk Hasan, president of the organization, said that the garment industry of Bangladesh is going through an important time, when the industry has unlimited opportunities on one side and many challenges on the other. “We need the government’s support to seize the opportunity and meet the challenges,” he said. The leader emphasized on the policy support of the government to utilize the opportunities of the future in the garment industry and to keep pace with the growth through it.

This was stated by Farooq Hasan at a meeting of the BGAEA delegation with senior secretary of the finance ministry Abdur Rauf Talukder at the secretariat on Monday. The BGMEA delegation included, among others, First Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice-President Shahidullah Azim, Vice-President (Finance) Khandaker Rafiqul Islam and Vice-President Md. Nasir Uddin.

At the meeting, the BGMEA leaders requested for extending the loan repayment period from the existing 18 months to 36 months as part of the incentive package given to deal with Covid. They also requested the government to waive the entire loan, interest and fund charges of 133 ailing garment companies with special consideration.
