Benjamin Ingrosso talks about his traumatic upbringing: “Chaos”

The artist Benjamin Ingrosso, 23, is first out this year’s Summer in P1. In the program, he talks about childhood, which was characterized by family quarrels and the early interest in writing music and hosting shows.

Benjamin begins by telling that there was chaos in his family home before he was even born. The 23-year-old’s parents are Pernilla wahlgren, 53, and Emilio Ingrosso, 55, who divorced in 2002, after ten years together.

– When my big brother Oliver is born, it is peace and joy. Mom and Dad are newlyweds and have just had their firstborn. When my big sister Bianca is born, the loving little family gathers around the hospital bed and is happy that big brother got a little sister as a birthday present, he says and continues:

– When I was born on September 14, 1997, my father was out on Stureplan and partying. That atoning lie that made me come has not directly made them stick together. On the contrary, they have kind of already ended when mom is lying there shaking.

“Heartbeat every night”

Benjamin talks about the traumatic memories from his childhood, when the family screamed and threw glasses during the quarrels that became part of everyday life.

– I feel the heartbeat when I think back, he says.

Benjamin says that he used to go to his mother’s room after the fight and to try to comfort her. He explains that Pernilla wanted to keep him away from the quarrels, but that he heard the screams through the walls.

“The show spirit became my protection mechanism”

Benjamin explains that he became interested in singing, dancing and acting at an early age. The show became a protective mechanism for him – and a way to spread joy and love in the middle of the chaos, he says.

Although Benjamin thought it was fun to perform and make people in a better mood, he says that it also became a pressure to always have to be “the happy one”. That he did not feel he had a right to be sad.

Today, the 23-year-old artist is not angry with either of his parents, but understands both.

– Dad had to go after all the shit he got in the divorce, and mom has had a hard time taking care of three difficult children herself. But it has been a heavy responsibility to constantly have to mediate between my relatives and at the same time understand where I myself fit into the calculation, says Benjamin in Summer in P1.

Benjamin Ingrossos “Summer in P1” was released as a podcast on Midsummer Day at 07.00 and broadcast at 13.00 in P1 and Swedish Radio Play.
