Beneficial farmers in sugarcane cultivation in Bhaluka

Farmers in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh have started sugarcane cultivation. As the soil of the upazila is suitable for sugarcane cultivation, they have been inspired to cultivate nectar, Sundari, Rangbilash, BSRI 41/42 varieties of sugarcane locally.

Some farmers have been cultivating sugarcane for the last few years and now they are self-sufficient. If there is not much damage due to disease, sugarcane can be sold for more than two and a half lakh rupees per acre. Excluding production cost 50-60 thousand rupees, the profit is more than 2 lakh rupees per acre. Therefore, the interest of farmers in sugarcane cultivation is increasing every year.

Tajuddin, a farmer from Mallick Bari village, said that although it is a profitable crop, they do not dare to cultivate more sugarcane. The reason given by them is that the sugar mills do not buy this variety of sugarcane commercially. It is eaten only by chewing or juice. Farmers will benefit a lot from sugarcane cultivation if it is bought in sugar mills. However, cultivating sugarcane on 6 bighas of land has cost 2 lakh rupees. I hope I can sell 6 lakh.

Farmer Mafizul said, I have been cultivating sugarcane for the last 3 years. One and a half lakh has been spent on 25 katha land. I hope to sell 5 lakh.

Sugarcane farmer Abdul Baten said sugarcane is a profitable crop. If the youth are interested in this profession, then unemployment will come down.

He said local wholesalers bought sugarcane from their fields and took it away. Due to the good weather, there was no such disease this time. The prices are also good.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Jasmine Jahan said sugarcane cultivation is increasing day by day, making it more profitable than other crops and local farmers have become more focused on this cultivation. At present, the agriculture officer is expecting a yield of 92,400 metric tons in 1,060 hectares of land.
