During the first half of this year, Belgians spent 5.56 billion euros on e-commerce. That is more than the same period last year when 5.1 billion euros were spent. This is evident from the Market Monitor of BeCommerce, the Belgian counterpart of Thuiswinkel.org.
From strongest riser in online share for expenses during the second quarter of 2021, the Food/Nearfood category (food products, household products, pet food) is up 51 percent compared to the same period last year.
37 percent of all online spending went to services such as travel and events, accounting for 40 million online purchases or a total of 1 billion euros.
There are no changes in the top 3 categories: for ‘Airline tickets and accommodation’ the share falls by 6 percentage points compared to 2020, but remains at number 1 with an online share of 85 percent. Within the category ‘Tickets for attractions and events’, 84% of spending was done online in the second quarter. For third place, the ‘Package travel’ category, 64 percent of spending was spent online.
The smartphone continues to gain in popularity with Belgians for online purchases: a quarter of all online purchases were made over the phone. The smartphone is still mainly used for cheaper purchases and the respondents of the Market Monitor indicate that this mainly concerns impulse purchases. The desktop and laptop, on the other hand, are used for the more expensive purchases.
Bancontact remains the most popular payment method with more than half of online shoppers using Bancontact this quarter. This corresponds to four out of ten online expenditures. The credit card remains number two, accounting for nearly a third of all online spending and the consumer’s first choice for more expensive purchases. At number three, we still find PayPal, accounting for a tenth of online spending.
