Beaches to enjoy the summer in the Schist Villages – Destinations

How hard is it to find a vacation spot this year? Do you want to escape the usual concentrations in the Algarve, on the Alentejo coast, in the coastal areas of the West and North or on the beaches of the regions of Lisbon and Porto? Well, the network of river beaches of Aldeias do Xisto, in the Center of the Country, inserted in areas of environmental heritage and classified natural areas, are an excellent alternative to enjoy the summer in the tranquility of the Interior.

With crystal clear waters, breathtaking natural landscapes, fresh air and lots of freshness, they are unique places of leisure and well-being. This set of beaches has water quality indexes and support infrastructures, which deserve the award of awards, such as the Blue Flag or the Gold Medal of Quercus. This year, there are 16 beaches with the Blue Flag and 21 with Gold Quality. ‘Sexta’ leaves 11 beach proposals to visit in the coming months.

Albufeira de Santa Luzia
In Pampilhosa da Serra is located the beach of the Santa Luzia dam, one of the most stunning landscape areas in the municipality and in the territory of the Schist Villages. The bathing season starts on July 1st and, in the current pandemic context, the beach has a capacity for 110 people. The place is pleasant for canoeing, hiking, climbing, fishing, nautical activities, or just let yourself be bathed in the floating pool. It fits into the type of mountain dam and receives water from the Vidual and Unhais streams, as well as from the Ceira river reservoir. The most active visitors can enjoy the bike path, the maintenance circuit, the multi-sports field and even a skateboard halfpipe. .

Alvoco das Várzeas (Oliveira do Hospital)
Located in a valley on the bank of the Alvoco stream (born in the Serra da Estrela, next to Alvoco da Serra), next to the beautiful medieval bridge (16th century), and with a magnificent view of the Serra da Estrela, this beach, with crystal clear water , is surrounded by a picnic area – serving small meals and delicious snacks – with leafy trees that provide a green and fresh environment. To explore the whole area, you can go to Caminhos do Xisto and stay at Quinta da Moenda, a pleasant touristic complex consisting of three buildings: an old 1770 stick mill, a mill and a distillery.

Grandfather (Oliveira do Hospital)
This beach, in the heart of the village, is bathed by the river Alva and the riverside of Pomares, a variation of two water courses that form the well-known island of Picoto, where a pleasant picnic area is installed. Located in the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, it consists of two water reservoirs in the area surrounding the island, with a pedestrian crossing point, a children’s pool fed with river water, grass areas, picnic equipment, changing rooms and pedestrian areas. . It has access to the water line for people with disabilities through treadmills, an amphibious chair and a beach walker.

Aldeia Ruiva (Proença-a-Nova)
A beach with accommodation, restaurant and other services. It is known for the natural beauty of the Isna stream – the dam is structured with unevenness, ensuring greater safety for children and adults. In the surroundings, you can choose two extensive areas (grass or sand) with several places to rest.

Canaveias (Gois)
On the banks of the Ceira River, this is a place that transmits tranquility and allows contact with nature in its pure state, being possible to hear the birds chirping. This beach has an extensive lawn area and is equipped with excellent infrastructure, such as access for people with disabilities, a playground and a bar / terrace.

Fernandaires (Vila de Rei)
Surrounded by high mountains, densely wooded with wild pines and strawberry trees, this beach offers visitors an extensive and splendid basin of water from the Castelo de Bode dam. It has a floating pool, as well as a bar, changing rooms and parking area. Ideal for wild camping.

Bogueira (Lousã)
Close to the village of Casal de Ermio in the municipality of Lousã, this river beach is part of a stunning landscape, where it is possible to enjoy nature in complete safety and with great tranquility, in a totally family environment. This leisure area along the Ceira River, which is crossed by a pedestrian bridge, has a very complete support equipment infrastructure, including a playground, picnic tables and a river pool for children to make the most of nature.

Fróia (Proença-a-Nova)
The clear and crystalline water of the springs of the Fróia stream is the main feature of this beach, which has received several distinctions. In addition to the wide promenade, where towels can be extended, it has a sandy area, with a small playground. Next to the beach is also the Fróia MTB Center, where you can discover some of the best landscapes in the region by bicycle. If you prefer, you can choose the circular walking route along the river. If you want to spend a few days in this region, you can stay in the village of Olives.

Tableware (Penela)
Adapted from the dams of Ribeira da Azenha, it is a source of pride for the people of the municipality. The water quality and excellent equipment have been praised. The depth of the bathing area, which is 3 meters on the diving board, becomes the ideal place for swimming. There is a restaurant with panoramic views.

Malhadal (Proença-a-Nova)
At the base of the Serra das Corgas, where the Isna stream (tributary of the Zêzere) meanders, it is a great place for rest and contact with nature. It is characterized by an enormous expanse of water (about 1 kilometer), surrounded by abundant vegetation. It is here that the first fluvial water park in the Centro region, Fluvifun, is located.

Piódão (Arganil)
It is located in the village of Piódão, one of the most visited Historical Villages in Portugal. Like the village, the beach uses shale for access and water dam, closed only in summer. The low temperature of the waters of the Piódão stream attests to its purity and the trees on the hillsides provide shade in the hottest days. The surroundings are rich in walking and mountain biking trails.
