Bangladesh has been elected a member of the Council of the International Ocean floor Authority (ISA). The council will serve a four-year term from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2024. This information was given by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations on Friday (March 5). The council has 36 members.
The headquarters of the International Seabed Authority are located in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the organization conducts, organizes, manages and regulates all kinds of activities related to minerals in the international seabed areas for the benefit of all the people of the world.
Bangladesh is working to take full advantage of the vast maritime potential gained through the settlement of maritime disputes with Myanmar and India. In order to fully harness the potential of the Sunil economy, Bangladesh needs full access to equitable rights to marine resources outside national waters, especially in ISA-controlled areas. For this reason, the activities of ISA are very important for Bangladesh. With the election of a member of the International Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (ISA), it is hoped that Bangladesh will have a greater chance of playing its part and protect its own interests.
Bangladesh is the current President of the Executive Council of the International Seabed Authority.
