Back to school with a new laptop

The beginning of the school year forces parents of pupils and students to evaluate whether their child needs a new computer or tablet.

To write about the importance of these devices as de facto work tools for older pupils and high school and university students would be carrying wood into the forest. Finally, the situation over the past two years, when due to epidemiological measures pupils and students had to stay at home and learn remotely, convinced even the most conservative parents. Moreover, nowhere is it guaranteed that another wave of the pandemic will not come. Will your child be able to get an adequate education in this case?

When choosing a laptop or tablet, you must take into account the specifics of use, in this case frequent or even daily use to school, and battery life. For technical and especially safety reasons, students do not have sockets in their desks. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the lightest laptop possible, even at the price of a compromise regarding the diagonal of the display. Especially for younger generations, we recommend models with a diagonal of 12-13 inches. You can buy a monitor for comfortable work or entertainment at home. The prices of monitors with a diagonal of 24 inches start from 100 euros. A laptop or tablet should last for at least 6 hours during normal work, i.e. one school day after breaks.

The situation is a bit more complicated in terms of price to size and weight. Due to the small size and weight, a 13-inch ultrabook would be an ideal choice for a schoolboy, but their prices start at 600 euros. It should be remembered that you are also paying for design and luxury materials, so for a metal ultrabook you can pay two to three times the price of a plastic notebook, which is comparable in terms of parameters, but bigger, thicker and heavier. If we do not count cheap models with a 10-inch display, the cheapest are 14-inch laptops, which are relatively large and heavy, but even in the price category of 250-300 euros you can also find relatively thin models of well-known brands weighing 1.5 kg. Of course, the manufacturer had to save somewhere, so don’t expect top performance from them, but a laptop with a less powerful processor, 4-8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space is more than enough for pupils and most students.

When choosing, we recommend also taking into account the view from the opposite side, that is, the desires and requirements of pupils and students. You guessed it, we mean the increasingly popular gaming laptops. Attractive design is more important for this age group than you think. Ultimately, buying a gaming laptop isn’t a bad idea at all. The performance and graphic capabilities of these machines are sufficient for any school project, or for editing graphics or videos for art students, while their dimensions and weight do not differ from ordinary laptops. It should be taken into account that the manufacturer will charge a reasonable price for an attractive design, but last year’s model from the lower end of the price range may have an acceptable price for you. Even in that case, expect a price of at least 700 euros. A good compromise for both work and games will be a classic laptop of a higher performance class with sufficiently sized dedicated graphics. Such a solution will usually cost you less than typical design-embellished gaming computers. Due to the not always careful treatment, it is necessary to calculate a lifespan of a maximum of 3-4 years, often even less, so when buying a laptop for a fifth grader, it makes no sense to choose the parameters so that it will serve him even in the graduation year.

Our dominant operating system is Windows, while most educational applications are only available for this operating system. When choosing, prefer a laptop with Windows 11.

Although tablets are smaller, lighter and the basic models are also much cheaper than laptops, it is necessary to make sure whether a tablet with Android or one of the basic models of the iPad will suit the student. If so, definitely prefer a model that comes with a cover with a keyboard (or can be purchased separately). The display should have a diagonal of at least 8, preferably 10 inches. Even the display resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels in the cheapest models is already enough for relatively comfortable work with documents and websites and applications, and students will need to write a lot. Tablet prices start at 120 euros.
