Babiš: The state of emergency could only be in the regions that request it

Prague – The state of emergency in the Czech Republic after Sunday could only apply in regions that request the government. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) told ČTK. However, the Prime Minister hopes that the Cabinet will ask all governors to declare a state of emergency not to apply different measures against covid-19 in different parts of the republic. The cabinet has an analysis at its disposal, according to which the re-declaration of a state of emergency on the basis of a request from the regions would not be unconstitutional, he added.

The Association of Regions today called on the government and opposition parties to work together on further action to resolve the pandemic. However, Babiš stated that it is now necessary to resolve the matter at the executive level. “By the evening, we must know which regions, based on the state of danger, will ask the government to declare a state of emergency so that we, as a government, can decide as soon as possible,” Babiš told ČTK.

According to Babiš, there would be room for negotiations with the opposition in the next 30 days, before the cabinet might have to ask deputies to extend the new state of emergency.
