The inhabitants of the island of São Jorge have felt the earth shake again in the last 24 hours. The Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA) said this Sunday that the number of earthquakes perceived on that island since the beginning of the seismovolcanic crisis has reached 255.
Between 10:00 pm yesterday and 10:00 am today, no tremor was felt.
According to CIVISA, the earthquake, of magnitude 2.5 on the Richter scale, was felt at 5:29 pm on Saturday with maximum intensity IV on the Modified Mercalli scale, in the parishes of Velas, Santo Amaro and Urzelina (belonging to the municipality of Velas ).
Since March 19, the seismic activity recorded in the central part of the island, located between Velas and Fajã do Ouvidor, has been “above normal”, with the largest earthquake being recorded at 9:56 pm on March 29 and having a magnitude of 3.8 on the Richer scale.
The island of São Jorge is at the volcanic alert level of V4 (threat of eruption) out of a total of seven, with V0 meaning “state of rest” and V6 “eruption in progress”
