Avast experts have identified a network of applications that subscribe users to expensive SMS mailings

Avast reported that the campaign to distribute malicious applications was named UltimaSMS. These applications, of which experts counted 150, were promoted through advertisements on Tik Tok and Instagram. Most of the apps have already been removed from Google Play at the request of the company.

“We can say that the attacker or the group of hackers behind the UltimaSMS campaign are quite greedy: this is evidenced by the abundance of advertisements for these applications on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. In particular, because of this, the campaign has become so large-scale and affected such a huge number of users, ”said Avast threat researcher Yakub Vavra.

The malware was disguised as third-party keyboards, QR code scanners, photo and video editors, spam call blockers, camera filters and games. The user was asked to enter a phone number in order to access the application’s functions. Then the user was subscribed to premium SMS. However, the functions of the application itself were not unlocked.

Users from Russia have downloaded malicious applications 27,000 times. The damage caused to one user was about 3 thousand rubles a month, experts said.
