AutoX launches a fleet of driverless autonomous taxis in Shenzhen, China

There’s been a lot of talk lately about autonomous management, and although we currently have at most SAE Level 2 cars on the market, third level cars could soon appear. Such was promised by Honda, for example (on the contrary, Audi abandoned the originally announced launch). Even in this case, a backup driver is still needed, who must pay attention to the road. Nevertheless, we have a few projects that have already been licensed in some areas to drive without a driver. One of them is startup AutoX, which was founded in 2016. It is headed by Dr. Jianxiong Xiao, also known as “Prof. X” from MIT and Princeton University. Since July, its autonomous cars have been able to travel on California roads at speeds of up to 45 mph (72 km / h), as has a fleet of 100 cars on Chinese roads in Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities. So far, however, it has been with backup drivers. That is changing now.

After six months of testing in Shen Chen with backup drivers, the company was allowed to drive without them, even though the local city traffic is more demanding than the one in california, where it is also being tested. It will first be a fleet of 25 cars of the system RoboTaxi Pilot, which will use the 5th generation of the autonomous system at SAE Level 4. It can orient itself in demanding city traffic, respond to pedestrians, cyclists and other cars. The cars are equipped with high-resolution cameras, two LiDAR sensors and also 4D radar sensors.
